Not as dumb as it sounds. May be buying a cherokee and im not sure how to engage 4WD. Ive done it thousands of times with trucks. But I know everything tends to be different.

One that I testdrove I was rolling went into neutral then put transfercase in wanted gear.

Is that correct? Dont want to destroy a transfercase that isnt mine yet.

:D

Believe it or not, I asked the same question. My 2K has 4hiPT 4hiFT 4lPT.
In order to shift into either of the 4Hi settings, just pull the lever up. Make sure you are moving and going less than about 40-45. Neutral is for Towing and lets the vehicle freewheel when being towed.
To shift to 4LPT, place the transmission in neutral. Pull lever up to neutral then to 4lo.

PT settings should only be used when not on dry pavement. FT setting can be driven all the time.

Hopefully, I got this right - otherwise I'm going to screw up a transfer case that the bank and I DO own....

Remember 4lo is tranny in neutral and Stopped. If you are rolling you will get some grinds and such... Not good.

I saw someone do this in a Grand C. . .yanked it into 4LO while in gear. Massive metallic CLANG, followed by revving and plaintive cries for help. The mechanical backlash from trying to stuff it in 4LO blew up the linkage, and the car was stuck wiht the transfer case in neutral about three hours off the highway. . .

Fortunately for the driver, I was able to pry on the lever with a "tar arn" and get it back in 4HI, or she woulda been HOSED.

the jeep website says, for a selectrac system:
"with the jeep rolling 2-3mph, shift trans in to N, then, while still rolling, firmly and quickly move in to 4-lo" then shift trans back to D.

i get better shifts into 4 lo while rolling.
slow down to the point that the speedo doesnt register, but you're rolling, knock the tranny to N, pull the lever right, back back, then knock the tranny back into D
That always shifts perfect for me. When i'm actually stopped, it grinds slightly.
