how to disable traction control?

Is there a way to disable traction control, my service writer did tell me its tied to the wheel sensors so I've tried pulling the fuse on the abs, but the programmers must have anticipated that and traction control stays on all the time then.

Any idea's?

and no, the little button does NOT turn it off, it just lowers the threshold. I've had problems with the system apply brake to the front wheels on steep hills making the rear wheels dig holes. and forget about trying to get the wheels spinning to assist getting through a mudhole...... not to mention having some plain old mud slinging fun.

this is very disappointing.......

I thought if you press the "little button" it only tempararily disables it.
But If you press and hold it for 5 seconds, it disables it fully?

The process is in the owners manual, but here it is

Turn ignition on and set the steering wheel straight with the jeep logo level put it in 4h and set the parking brake

Turn the wheel clockwise until the jeep logo is upside down. DO NOT let the wheel move and press and hold the traction control button for 7 seconds

Now turn the wheel counter clockwise with the logo is upside down again and press and hold the button for 7 seconds again.
Now straighten the wheel so the logo is right side up and press/hold the button for 7 secs again.
taction control disabled should now appear in your odometer cluster.

This needs to be performed 100% perfect or it will not work.

How do you turn it back on? Put one hand on right front tire, unscrew antenna 3 turns, and then summon the Invisible Swordsman?

Perfect, many thanks....

Good to know there are options......

time to do some testing :2thumbsup:

I've tested this ( many times ) and I get no response on holding down the button. In fact the override light goes out after holding it doen for 10 seconds, no chime nothing. They must of removed this feature when they changed the computer on the '11 model year.

Bummer, back to square one. Anyone know how to disable the brake sensors without major surgery? I think that any be the only way. Personally I think if I'm old enough to pay for a new jeep I should be allowed to enter an address into the nav system while driving with the traction control off:mad::mad:

You can call the dealer to see if they can turn it off, or do some google work to see if anyone else got it off on the 11's. You may be doing the insanely difficult procedure wrong. At least, before I would go cutting ABS lines (which by the way, will only cause a Christmas Tree on your dash) I would search threads for other guys with 11's who have tried this.

It worked on my 08.

I just looked at the 2011 manual and it says that the momentary touch of the button for partial disable or the steering wheel dance listed above for a more inclusive disable are your two options.
The extended push of the button must just be for the older models.
There is a link in JK F.A.Q. for the owners manual down-load if anyone needs it!

I've got an 07' Rescue Green JKU and tried to hold it down. I have held it for minutes at a time much less 10 second and can't seem to get it to turn off? Dirves me nuts on rainy days taking corners, the stupid thing is always engaging. One day it's going to cause a damn accident, not avoid one!

Did you have to do anything else or just hold it?

Like I said in my first post. This needs to be done 100% correctly. If you mess it up at all then it will not work.
As far as holding the button for 5 seconds. Yes that deactivates it when and only when your in 4H. If you do the steering wheel trick, that deactivates it ALL THE TIME EVEN IN 2WD.

In 4Lo that tractional control automatically turns off

So, can you confirm you've been able to do this on your '11 ?

The easiest way to disable traction control and all those other computer demons on a JK that we ***** about is sort of like a priest exorcising any demon - only using gasoline instead of holy water and a bic lighter instead of a thurible....

I COPIED AND PASTED THIS RIGHT FROM THE OWNERS MANUEL

The following procedure will disable (or re-enable) ESC functionality in the vehicle:
1. Shift the transfer case into the 4H range position.
2. Turn the steering wheel until it is centered and the wheels are pointed straight ahead.
3. Cycle the ignition key OFF to ON.
4. Wait approximately five seconds for the system bulb check.
5. Turn and hold the steering wheel one-half turn to the right (clockwise).
6. Press and hold the ESC OFF button for seven seconds.
7. Turn the steering wheel back to center, and turn and hold an additional one-half turn to the left (counterclock- wise).
8. Press and hold the ESC OFF button for seven seconds.
9. Turn the steering wheel back to center.
10. Press and hold the ESC OFF button for seven sec- onds.
11. Cycle the ignition key to OFF.
After performing the ESC disable procedure correctly, “ESC OFF” will be displayed in the odometer for ap- proximately 12 seconds each time the ignition is moved to ON. Repeating the ESC disable procedure will re- enable normal ESC operation.

When I 1st read this process I though you guys were joking. Wow, it is definately not something you would do by accident.

Since I haven't lifted or changed the tires, I'll just use the ESP Off or Partial mode

The main reason why I disabled mine was to extend the life of the back brakes. The traction control is constantly applying the brakes if it thinks anything is out of the ordinary.
It also annoying when you try to pull out in traffic on a wet road and the engine dies out, because you spin your tires a little.

You gotta cross the pinky toe of your left foot over the big toe of your right while you do it or it won't work...

(the steering wheel input has to be real good - and it does tend to want to come back a bit when you relax the input)

Perhaps you need a wheel alignment. If the steering wheel and the front tires are not both straight then it wont work.

The traction control activates when your wheels slip or when the computer senses that your steering wheel is turned in a direction that is differant from the direction that the jeep is travelling. (sliding in a corner)
This is the reason for the steering wheel procedure.

You really shouldn't have to jack it up. I did mine while it was in my garage and I'm running 35's. You must not be doing something right. Really take your time. Go through the list that I copied and pasted from the owners manual and double check your procedure. You'll get it.

I could never get it to work with the engine running, but usually works with the engine off. I concentrate on the steering wheel and move the wheel at a steady rate, never allowing the wheel to stop or reverse direction until the set point is reached.
