Well, a few weeks ago I was told my brake lights werent working. But everything else worked. Now I had my entire dash off, so I was able to get up under there and get a really good look at it, so I feel I can explain it pretty good to guys that need to change theirs. I wasnt able to get any pics because its really crowded under there and I couldnt fit my, a camera, and a light under there and come out with a picture that wasnt fuzzy as hell.

So this is what you need to do. Since I have my dash and seats out, Im not sure how easy this will be for you if you have the dash in, but you will need to take your seat out.

This is what your switch will look like. I have a '92. and all the stock photos I have seen are wrong. They show a different switch, but this is the switch I got when I ordered from Quadratec.

I sat in the jeep on the driver side floor with my legs hanging out the door. Then I leaned forward and was able to put my face right by the switch. If you look at the switch, it looks like its threaded, which it is, but it does not screw in. Notice the ridge running up one side of it. You will see what I mean when you look at it.

Get on the passenger side of the steering column and look at the switch. It will be at the top of the brake pedal arm. Get under there with a light and a small flathead screwdriver. That will be all you need. Make sure you have disconnected your battery prior to this. Unhook the switch, and then look at where it goes into the plate that holds it. On the side towards the firewall, there is a metal clip that goes around the "threaded" part of the switch. You will see some small tabs on it, and one of them will be curved. It will curve so that it holds the switch between the "threads". You need to get your small flathead screwdriver and get it up under there and then work the switch out. Dont bend it back too much, cause my switch did NOT come with that part. So dont screw it up too bad. You just need to get it back enough to work the switch out.

Once you get it out, get the new switch, line the ridge on the "threads" with the groove in the tabbed ring, and push it in. Plug the switch back in, hook your battery back up, and test to make sure it all works. If your brake lights are on all the time now, all you need to do it push the switch towards the firewall some more.

Hopefully this will help some of you guys out there. I wasnt able to find a good tutorial on this, and if I hadnt had my dash off, I would have spent a few hours under there rather than 15 minutes.

P.S.
This is for a '91-95 YJ. Im not sure if the switch for an earlier YJ is the same, but all the stock photos show a part that looks just like mine. But then again, the one for a '91-95 YJ looks nothing like what it actually is.
