How much does a 1980 CJ7 Tub Weigh?

Going to pull the tub off my 80 CJ7 this weekend and I'd like to put it up on something like sawhorses. I'll make something custom so it sits fairly level. I have some work to do on the tub while it's off the frame so I want it to be pretty stable.
Any suggestions or tips? I know I can do it, but if someone has experience. It's better to use it rather than try to reinvent the wheel. Little help?

I’m guessing an empty tub is maybe 250 lbs. I know two folks of good strength can easily pick one up and walk around with it. BUT that is completely empty. If you have things like the roll bar, tailgate, dash, steering column, etc still in it the weight quickly adds up and is into shop crane use only..... or now four people.

If you do saw horses. Don’t do the store bought cheap plastic kind. I would build my own wooden ones with wood screws. Extra supports will be better to tie the legs together like an “A” from the side. I’d even do a side to side cross brace so it doesn’t fall over sideways.

I’ve used both a dolly/ hand truck and a wagon to move tubs around by myself. I lay old carpet down if in the garage or use the thick grass outside to not damage/ dent/ scratch them when I stand them on the side to work on them. Padding the saw horse tops might work too

I'm definitely going to be at the bottom end of your estimate. All that will be left is the pedals and brake master cylinder and the tailgate.

Thank you for the feedback only in a jeep CJ!

I set mine on three saw horses. Two in the front half with 4x4s running side to side; a third under the tailgate for rear support. I was able to get under it to work on it and could sit inside, also.

My son and I built a dolly out of 4x4's and 2x8's and a set of heavy duty casters works great. the tub can sit flat or on is side plus we can move it around as needed and its very strong. its our redneck rotisserie

Nice! Any chance I could get you to tell me the measurements of the deck? How long and how wide?

I am pretty sure I just went 4' x 8' I will measure it tonight when I get home from work and confirm. I also added a bunch of eye bolts to it as well to strap the tub down and pull it

It is 4' x 8' outer dimension
it took
three 4x4x8s,
two 2x8x8s,
two 2x4x8s
four heavy duty urethane casters with locking wheels
1 box of 3" stainless steel deck screws
10 eye bolts 2 front and back 3 on each side
3 ratchet straps to secure tub

I built a hoist on a basketball pole that I had on the side of my driveway. (took down the rim and backboard, built arms extending out with pulleys and a rope) that I used for lifting the tub off, also used for taking the hard top off and on, lowering heavy duty bumper into place to bolt up, etc. I have had to do most of the work alone (since my youngest went away to college) so having a hoist of some sort is helpful. I built a dolly for the tub much like the one mentioned previously but I used the galvanize steel supports (Home Depot elec dept) for the base (wood 2x8 for the "cross pieces) so I could use motorcycle tie downs to secure the tub (the elec supports have holes drilled along the front for hooks). I also used casters , with brakes, (Home Depot). This "rig" allowed me to keep the tub strapped and use a floor jack to raise one end and put up on jack stands (the whole rig) to sand blast the bottom prior to paint, move it around to access different areas. Since the original build I have built a "crane" into my garage by filling the gap between two studs with 4X4s and hanging an I beam across the span to pull motors, tubs, tops, etc. (single car side, 8' door, spaced just behind roll up door when full opened). The 4x4's are cheap, and the I beam came from a metals recycler. I am adding a hook on rollers (Tractor Supply) this week that will slide along the length of the I beam. Hope this helps.

Would be helpful to see some pictures. Without pictures it didn't happen! :grin2:
