Help Choosing Selectable Locker for Ford 8.8

Hey, guys. Originally I was going to buy piece by piece and do a tranny swap, 8.8 swap, then SOA. But I think I'm gonna save up all the money from working this summer or buy it all while working and just install it all this Winter when I'm going to school. (I work all day in the sun, and after work / during the weekend, I find myself NOT wanting to work in the sun more.)

I was ORIGINALLY going to try to find a Ford 8.8 4.11LSD and then match my front with 4.10 gears, change the clutch pads in the LSD and call it a day.

But it's proving problematic finding a 4.11 LSD down here in Miami, or Junk yards don't know what they have (more than likely true). So, rather that, find a blown carrier 8.8, then put in a selectable locker with 4.11 gears.

Any opinions on this option / best option?

And, like I said: I would really like a selectable locker. What has your specific experience with your / another's selectable locker?

EDIT:: I do not want a lunchbox locker. This is my DD, and I don't even want to THINK about the locker being there. I'd rather spend the few hundred extra for this luxury.

ATM I'm looking at the ARB Air Locker (Which is costly PLUS I need the air system, which might not be too hard / costly, as I have connections.) and the Eaton electronic locker, which at $700 isn't too bad.

I don't have one yet but I'm going to grab the eaton e-locker when funds allow. I currently have the Detroit truetrac and with a couple clicks of the parking brake it is almost a selectable locker.

ugh! That's what I have to do! My parking brake.

I should probably do it before I get my manual transmission... wait, what am I talking about?! I live in Florida! It'd be a hard task to find a hill around here!

I was really leaning toward the Eaton because of it's pricing and lack of air system. But OBA is nice.

If Yukon made a zip locker for an 8.8 I would recomend it. But the next would be an arb. However arbs are really really expensive.

Me personally I run a spartan lunchbox locker. It clicked and popped for the 1000 mile break in and after I changed the oil it's been quiet ever since. It's my daily and there isn't any negatives to street driving, unless you drive in lots of snow/ice conditions.

I appreciate the advice... but unless I find someone down here with a Spartan luncher installed that'll let me drive their rig, I don't think I'd go with a Lunch Box.

EDIT:: Lunch boxes scare me. I have this bad habit of leaving places way too late when I'm far too tired... and I'd hate to have the back end lock up just momentarily.

I went with the ARB and don't regret it for a minute. Keep your eyes open for ARB deals, I bought the rear then the front later, but when I got mine if you bought one you got the smaller compressor free (that one will run both no probs) if you bought two you got the larger one with the air up kit free.

I'm unaware of the pros and cons of the air vs electronic systems. Any insight?

Is the electronic more prone to failure?

Don't know, I've never used an electric one. I don't even know anyone with one.

First question: where did you get that back piece? Mine has a messed up hole in it.
If you're going to use this area, I'd just get a black plastic 1" notebook and cut up the cover as needed. The floppy ones not the hard ones.

Second: Where did you get those switches? I've seen others use them but I've never found them.

EDIT:: I realized those switches come with the lockers. D'oh! But first question still stands if applicable.

Go ARB, and if funds allow install an OBA system. I did that over the summer and haven't regretted it. I think it was around $1600 with the axle, mounts, locker, diff cover, e-brake cables, York compressor, and the clutch to make it work with the 4.0L.

i just finished mine with a e-locker. Have not had a chance to play with it off road yet.

I went with an OX locker mainly because I picked one up for the Dana 30 front on CL for a good price so I ordered one for the 8.8 as well. Still waiting on delivery. I have been around a lot of ARB's in some extreme conditions and never seen one fail.

Which ones have you seen fail?

Honestly, OX & ARB's are the only selectable lockers I have been around. Well.....Toyota's factory electric lockers too, but that does not apply here.

I have seen all maner of lunchbox lockers fail, I have even seen Detroits fail & every Lincoln (welded spiders) fails after a couple of years.

ARB here too.

I have a front air locker too, so made a belt driven oba system with a tank.
All is well.

Both front and rear have a super kit in them(super 88 and super 30), and is welded and trussed up. Make it as strong as possible...

The problem with ARB is that its going to be roughly 1k-1.2k for the rear locker and compressor. When I can get the eaton for 700. Honestly, unless someone has told me the eaton fails a lot, I'm going with that. Considering how I don't off road much. And from my research the eaton is solid.

idskot- I know its off topic but why do auto locker scare you? I daily drive my yj with a Detroit in my dana 35 and the only time I even notice it being there is when I get on the skinny pedal when turning (tire chirp a little) other than that I cant even tell its there! and in the snow which wont be a prob for you it not half as bad as people say it is. I am in the middle of a 8.8 swap right now and am throwing a spartan in it and I know for a fact I wont regret it! My last jeep (zj) had the elocker in the 8.8 and I had lots of problems with it for some reason I personally hate them. If those are you choices tho I would go with the air locker!

That's not off topic at all. Later on down the line im getting a locker in front, and I like the idea of being.able to choose which axle is locked. Also, like I said before, I don't want to hear a chirp at all. It just makes me nervous.
