Heated Steering Wheel not working

My heated steering wheel stopped working last week (vehicle is 4 weeks old). Dealer traced to a fault in the wheel and installed an new one. New one worked for 1 week and now same failure mode is back (heat switches on for 1 sec. and turns right back off). So, its going back to the dealer today. Feedback from them is that they have never seen the steering wheel heater fail.

Just curious if anyone else has had theirs fail?

Need is subjective. I love mine, don't know how I've lived without all these years. :)

Just one of life's simple pleasures I guess, and I think everyone needs a bit of pleasure. For those more practical, there is no need to use bulky driving gloves with all their disadvantages.

My Jeep sits outside and when it is 40 degrees or less I use remote start when I am getting my coat on to go and when I get to my Jeep my seat is warm and my steering wheel is warm and I don't need gloves. They are correct, once you get it you cannot live without it.

Update:
Per Chrysler, the heated seat controller also controls the heated steering wheel and should be replaced as next step. Unfortunately, part is on national backorder. Guess they are having some issues. Not sure I completely buy the diagnosis. Why would changing the wheel solve the issue for a week if the controller is bad. Maybe a bad controller is damaging the heater element in the wheel? My wheel did get quite warm.

As to the need of a heated wheel...

I'm sure none of us "need" a GC in the first place. All the bells and whistles are nice to have and its annoying when they don't work especially with temps in the single digits right now.

If there is a short in the circuit, from a burned out heating element for example, the relay will cycle on and then off in 3 seconds or so when it detects the short. Could be the steering wheel, but why did the new one fail after one week? Could be the controller, but why did changing the steering wheel get it to work?

Can't wait to hear the outcome of this one. My money is on a defective controller.

Update:
Heated seat controller finally came in yesterday. Installed and still not working. Per Chrysler, steering column controller should be replaced next. Dealer found one and installed. Called to say all is working well. When I picked up the car, it was NOT working. I don't get how they can say that it tested functional when it clearly does not work.

So, back to square 1. I still think that one of the controllers was the culprit, but it damaged the heating element in the wheel in both wheels.

What a saga. You may be right, and now that both controllers have been replaced the second steering wheel needs to be replaced.

Good luck.

I had this happen to me during the winter of 2012... The dealership messed around for a while and first replaced the control module and then went on and looked at some other things and ended up replacing the steering wheel saying the heating element in the steering wheel was defective and had caused the issue... Either way, got a new steering wheel and control module. It seems as if they replaced both thus far?

My drivers heated seat just stopped working. It has similar symptoms to yours where the switch lights up for a couple seconds and the shuts off. The passenger side seat and heated steering wheels both work fine. Mine is a 12' Overland. Any ideas on this one?

Thanks,
Bryan
