Since the beginning I have had a suspension noise on the front left on my 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4. When I got the car brand new I would only notice it on very high speed bumps at low speed. It has been getting progressively worse over the past year that I owned the car. I have had it at the dealership twice, however, they "cannot find anything wrong" - which I find ridiculous. Even took the technician on a test ride, he acknowledges the noise but said it is normal for the air suspension. I tried to explain that if it was normal, then why does the right front not make the noise and he had no counter argument...

What I noticed recently is that the noise gets worse the colder the temperature.

I uploaded a video demonstrating the noise: https://youtu.be/cFdbnJFVWaQ

Does anyone have any idea what this could be / where it is coming from? Is this really "normal"?

Hi Ben,

I'd like to check in with our techs here at headquarters. Would you mind sending your VIN in a PM so I can look into this further?

Thanks!

It's been doing that since you bought it? I wouldn't let a Service Adviser have a moment's rest until he addressed it. From the sound, I'd guess a bad shock or bushing somewhere. Could be just a bolt/nut loose that's allowing movement somewhere that shouldn't have it.
You've got the air suspension; does it make the same sound at all ride heights? Can you recreate the sound by hand ? If so, you can get under the vehicle and locate the sound while a buddy pushes it up and down to create the noise. As loud as that is, I'd imagine it would be easy to find.

Yes, it's been there since day one - just not as bad. Visually inspected the suspension and could not find anything. Unfortunately also cannot recreated it by hand. I tried different ride heights and it is present in all heights. I took another video today that shows the noise from the outside of the vehicle: https://youtu.be/dugfA8qkSKY

benvb,

Did your suspension noise issue ever get resolved? If so what was the fix? My '14 EcoDiesel w/ QL is making the same noise from front left suspension over bumps. It's getting progressively worse. Seems to happen more in colder weather. Dealer replaced that side's whole suspension assembly about 1.5 years ago (at ~10k miles iirc) for the same issue. The noise is back now, currently at 29k mi.

Thanks for any info you can pass along.

I hope you get it resolved.

I've got a clunking noise on my '17 trailhawk with the QuadraLift. Dealer and I tested three or four and they're all the same so I hope it's not "normal"
I know this is an old post, but my 2020 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk also makes a clunking noise in the front end going over speed bumps. Dealer also said it is normal. Was there ever any resolution to yours?

I'm taking it back to the dealer next week. It will be the 4th time for this same issue.

I think the more solid clunking sound is the suspension travel maxing-out. I think that is considered normal. This happens especially in the higher lift settings because it doesn't have as much travel.

My issue sounds more loose and creaking.

I took it back to the dealer in December, at first they thought it was the control arms / control arm bushings which were of course not in stock. After a week the parts came in and they replaced them but the problem was not resolved. They then suspected the sway bar, which also was not in stock, after another week waiting they replaced the sway bar and bushings which finally fixed the issue.

I have the same issue on my 2014 JGC Summit, but its not as loud as that in the video, at least not from the inside. In my car you definitely hear the squeak. Weird how it seems to be only the front left for all of us who have this issue. I don't think I want to bring my in until it gets worse, lol. I have the maxcare warranty and I think that would be covered.

Hey benvb, I'm originally from Norfolk, just curious, which dealer fixed your issue, if you don't mind me asking. Thanks!

I hate to continue to read these stories about QL noises. The only way I was able to get rid of mine was to get rid of my overland and get a Limited with the conventional suspension (which I promptly upgraded to OME). It's been awesome.

To still see these "noise" posts on 2016/17 models with QL is unacceptable.

I dunno, but there have been more steel sprung suspension noise discussions here than QL noise discussions. But that may just be because there is more steel sprung WK2s out there. There seems to have been more lifted suspension noise discussions than QL too. The steel sprung rear shocks and brackets are notorious for rattling.

Update: Took the jeep back to the dealer Tuesday evening. They re-created the noise again wed. Morning. The service advisor said the sway bar links had a lot of play in them. They have ordered the bushings and links and will replace them tomorrow. Why would the sway bar links and bushings be worn out at only 16k miles?? This is a 2015 Overland purchased new in March of 2016!!

One of the rubber boots could have torn due to road debris. If water gets into those boots, it's only a matter if time before the noise starts.

I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee that has been to the dealership numerous times for front end noise. The last time I was told it's normal tire noise. I don't buy it.

This video is the noise I get over bumps. You can hear it throughout the video but it stands out pretty well between these times: :08 - :20, :52 - 1:00, and 1:40 - 2:00 especially with earbuds in.

I have a 2015 GC Limited 4x4 and Im starting to get a noise on the passenger side that only occurs when going over speed bumps or the suspension travels. It seems as if something is rubbing and it is louder during the winter months. I plan on bringing mine in soon to see if they can figure this out.

Did the OP ever find a fix for this?

I thought it was just me! I have a 2015 Summit Ecodiesel and when I first had the clunking, I replaced the end links with Bwoody ones, that solved it, for a few weeks. I already had swaybars on order (Hellwig rear and SRT front) so while I installed those, I checked every bolt of the suspension, all were tight.

This solved the problem for a few months, but yesterday I took the Jeep on some fire roads, and all of a sudden, the clunking is back! I checked all the bolts upon my return, but nothing (that I can reach from underneath) is loose??

I'm guessing that if I go to the dealership they are going to claim that all the work I did myself is the culprit, so I'm torn if I should even bother...

It's really annoying me that a 60k car, that is claimed to be off road capable, is built so poorly.

When you checked the bolts recently, did you jack it up in the same/similar was as you did when installing the sway bars?

I have a set of race ramps for my racecar that I use, in combination with OR2, so I don't jack it up at all.

When reading on here that it could be the struts, it starts to make a lot more sense, as the sound is akin to the sound of a damper "topping out". I've had a similar thing on my mountainbike suspension when I add too much air in the shock.
