So I have seen the FSM and some threads that suggest RTV on "the corners" when replacing the oil pan gaskets. I have one of those nice Fel-Pro blue molded gaskets. I am thinking that RTV is not necessary...am I correct? I got the gasket installed and the bolts hand threaded, and then thought I would ask around here for people that have been here, done this. I did the RMS..which by the way makes me want to punch kittens in the face. Never again.

If its the rubber fancy ones I would say no none needed I have also used just RTV for diffs no gaskets and zero leaks after 4 years and jacking from the diffs I know bad me.
I am guessing its the tranny pan I would say don't put RTV on and just make sure you torque the bolts to spec as they can strip easy.
Still need to do mine and have been looking for a good gasket as I don't trust the felt ones and I am putting a pan with a drain in it so I may just RTV it but do you mine showing a link to what you bought if you can find it I wouldn't mind finding a lubelocker type gasket for the 42re tranny.

All this is just my opinion I am not a guy who has worked on cars for 30 years so do what you feel is right.

He did the RMS so that was the engine oil pan not the tranny's. I would say use a bit of RTV to set the gasket in place. You don't absolutely need it but if your gasket moves even slightly as your set the oil pan you will be doing more than just punching kittens in the face lol.

Yeah, maybe I should be pulling the pan back off at making sure the gasket is seated properly. I was careful when I applied it...there's really only one place it could possibly be off-just due to the design-at the rear.

Not sure about the RTV. I'm planning on holding the windage tray in place with a few bolts while I secure the pickup tube. The pickup tube should hold the tray/gasket in place while putting the oil pan back on.

Hoping to do this myself in a few weeks while I have the trackbar out and axle dropped for other repairs and the lift kit. Sounds easier than dropping the Y pipe.

Oh, wait... 4.0. Dunno about that one. Sorry.

I pulled the pan back off. I wanted to make SURE that the oil pan gasket was in place...the only issue I am now having is HOW to hold it in place while I install the pan over it. I tried putting a couple dabs of RTV on the "four corners" but that didn't work....that gasket is too heavy and it just fell back down after taking the bolts out. Not exactly sure what I am going to do now...

Let the RTV cure long enough. You might use more of it too, I don't think it will hurt.

I recently replaced the engine oil pan gasket on my 4.7L; I didn't use RTV. One thing to watch out for is to make sure that the sealing flange on the pan is straight. The gasket is held in place by the windage tray, just follow the procedure outline in the repair manual.
