2003 Rubicon with ~65K miles.

Engine light came on yesterday - and I drove it about another 30 miles. Once in the garage, it had a light burning smell.

Any ideas? I live in Richmond, VA - any advice on where to take it?

thanks!

Thanks - I checked it out:

P0442 (M) Evap Leak Monitor Medium Leak Detected
A small leak has been detected in the evaporative system.

Any ideas if this is serious? I have done all the work on the Jeep so far, is this something I can fix or should I bring it in?

thanks!

Try replacing the gas cap first. Get one from the dealer even thought it costs more. For some reason the aftermarket caps don't give the same seal. I tried the aftermarket cap first but ended up with the expensive dealer cap. If that doesn't work, there are threads on this forum that offer a variety of fixes. Good luck.

Try the gas cap first and then check the evap hoses(small black plastic lines) running in the engine compartment.I had a small evap leak code P0456 and found a cracked hose directly behind the front driver's side wheel(on two different Jeeps with different codes).I taped the hose for now and disconnected the battery to reset the code. It's been good for the past week. The evap canister is above the passenger side rear wheel well under the plastic. The burning smell was most likely just something else.
p.s. It's not very serious unless it starts running bad.

OK - so I took the Jeep out for a quick test drive.

After about 1 mile, I was going up a hill and the engine was making a feathering noise - kind of in the frequency of a belt squeal. The more the engine worked, the worse it got - if I put it in neutral and coasted it did not make a noise.

Then the burning smell came back.

So I took it home and looked under the hood. You could tell that coolant had spilled out from around the radiator cap, and there was some fresh spray on the bottom side of the hood. Engine temp was within normal range.

Questions:
1. Not sure what that noise is, I was thinking it could be the fluid coming out, but really the frequency pattern was too consistent and the reaction to the RPM was too consistent.

2. Could the radiator cap be the problem with the Evap Leak code? Could the burning smell be the coolant burning off on the engine?

Looking more and more like I may need to bring it in.

thoughts appreciated....
