What problems should i expect if i buy a CRD? I see alot of crd's going to the dealer for EGR valves, and i saw one guy having problems with the tranny. Is the egr valve something that i would have to visit the dealer all the time? I am really close on buying a crd, just some this things kind of worry me a little.

so far my Liberty CRD has gone in for service a few times, as I write this it is in service for the dang MIL (check engine). The first time was for a faulty power steering pump and the second time for the EGR valve. It looks like this time it's the EGR valve again. All in all, I really love this little truck and I would recomend it to you. The service manager told me that DC have updated the design of the new EGR valves and they shouldn't give us anymore headaches.

I got one of the first ones in the US, and all it needed was a couple of software updates and it's been running fine, and it's almost a year old now. Go for it!
 
The only time I had studdering problems and a lot of smoke was in Colorado. I was running on a tank of fuel I picked up off I-80. The fuel gave me the absolute best highway MPG I have ever had to date but for some reason after a long coast down a mountain with the trans in 1st and 2nd, the engine started putting out a lot of smoke. It got a little scary because I only had the Jeep for a week or two. I pulled over and reved the engine a few times to clean things out. A ton of black smoke came out and because of the wind direction, the smoke got sucked into the air filter. This left a black residue on the filter. The smoke died down and I went on my way. For the next few days I had hard cold starts (died twice on starting) and a rough idle. It all straightened out after a new tank of diesel and some highway miles. Since my on highway performance was excellent, I went back to the same station to fill up on my return trip. I mananged to see 500 on my trip odometer for that tank. I could have had even better if I kept my speeds a little lower. I'm currently using fuel I find around the city (Chicago) and have no problems to speak of. I've heard fuel around cities tend to have higher requirements imposed on them to cut back on smog. This in turn adds to the cost.

When the Jeep was new my first tank of fuel gave me 22.1 mpg for my average weekly driving style. Now a typical week leaves me at 20.0 mpg. This probably is just the difference between summer and winter fuel. My winter driving habits are a little different as well with 4WD occasionally being used on wet pavement. My gunky, dusty air filter may even be holding me down. I'll change it and see what happens.

The only thing I notice about the transmission is it can be a little 'clunky' in rush hour crawl type traffic. When I'm speeding up and the trans shifts from first to second and then I have to let off the pedal just after the shift... the shift back down to first will be a little hard. That is the only driving situation I've noticed it in.

I'm a little over 8,000 miles now and have no complaints other than feeling guilty that I drive too much because it's fun.
 
The 2005s will all need EGR valves if it hasn't already been done, like ctchank said they redeisgned it so that it won't be a problem once replaced.

That's the only really common problem - everything else is the exception rather than the rule.

BTW my best mileage was 28MPG+ - a couple hours cruising @ 60 one nice day back in September. Before winter fuel hit I would get 23MPG 'round town.
 
I ordered mine in January 2005 with delivery in March. The only problem I have had in 15,000 miles was the insulation under the hood rubbed on the top radiator hose. I took it in and they replaced the insulation with a newer design and a new hose. I have not yet had an EGR problem, however I expect one with the winter blend. I love mine so far.
 
Getting close to 15,000 miles on mine and I've never had any EGR or tranny issues.
 
Hey, don_spiro, remember one thing: on here you will hear the 1 in 1000 who have a particular problem, you'll rarely hear anything from the other 999 who have NO trouble whatever.

Beyond that, and even though I'm one of those who've had an EGR go bad, my CRD seems to be great. I'm looking forward to many years of enjoyment from this vehicle.
 
what are the bad egr symptoms? Our CRD stutters a little after hard excelleration then letting off the accelerator.
 
Despite the issues I like mine. It has been in the shop 20 days over the last 6 months. I had the main computer replaced (14 days in shop), egr valve (3 days in shop), I also have clunking brakes that its been in for 4 times and still clunk, the overhead garage door opener doesnt work, and it still studders after all the latest flashes and egr valve replacement.

I like the gas mileage and towing power, but I am getting a little peeved with all the issues I've been having.

Whatever you do dont get the clothe seats. They stain like nothing you've ever seen before. Spill some water on them and alas a big stain.
 
They just did my EGR valve and updated the software ni the power control computer. It's running better now that it ever did.
 
I picked my 05 CRD up October 1st and now have 5500 miles on it w/o issue. (knock on wood)

No problems so far and the best mileage I got was 24mpg so far.

I picked up my crd last monday, and it has been everything i wanted and more!
The only problem is the dealer I picked mine up from sucks... hard core.
I brought it back once for a check engine light already and they said "we just reset the code, probably a misfire"... morons, because I drove it off the lot and the light went back on again :brickwall :brickwall

when i do bring it in though, they give me a fully loaded grand cheroke to drive around till its fixed, so thats good.

Its going in today to hopefully fix the problem, but I haven't felt anything wrong with the car besides that.

Finding a good service shop is hard, and once you do - stick with it.

I am beginning to think that no good dealerships exist anymore...

I know that I am not poor, but I am not rich either - and $30k is a lot of money. I just want to be treated like they care that my $30k vehicle is broken... But most seem to act like I owe them something for taking time out of their busy day to work on my car...

I mean, I have to take vacation time to go to the dealership... They just never get it.

Heck... I've coaxed 24+ mpg out of my 3.7 GAS engine... and I AVERAGE ~19.5 tank to tank (20.5 LAST tank)..... are you guys telling me that I can get mileage almost as good (and sometimes better) out of a 3.7L as you can out of the average CRD?? :confused: I thought the primary selling point about the diesel (besides longevity) was the outstanding mileage?

Again, factory freak, if it's even true what you claim. We are not just talking about gas mileage with the CRD, we are talking a better transmission (545RFE) Better transfer case (selec-trac standard) better passing power, more torque, engine life. It is funny how some of the 3.7 guys are so threatened by the CRD. You have a gas, thats fine, quit trying to act like you have all the benefits and more with your 3.7. No one is buying it.

Again... NOT a "factory freak".... I just think it's funny how you CRD guys are quick to compare your '05 CRD's to an '02 or '03 3.7L engine for mileage comparisons. If you're ever down here in central FL, I'd be glad to take you out for a ride, and show you some driving tips.... who knows... maybe you'd be able to get 30+ mpg out of your CRD afterward. :rolleyes:

I'm NOT "threatened" by the CRD... I just think that it's of marginal financial benefit unless you're planning on keeping your Libby for the next 500,000 miles... or if you intend to rack up 25K+ miles a year. For many users who don't drive that much, and/or don't intend to keep their Libby's for that long, it makes more sense to buy the 3.7L IMO.... not everybody wants or needs "Selec-Trac", and at least recently the only post I've seen about tranny troubles was a CRD owner :confused: .

ps. yes... it's true what I claim about the mileage. If you have the 'nads to suggest that I'm lying again, then I'll take it as an insult.... I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since I'm sure you're sceptical..... There's absolutely no benefit or reason for me to lie about the results that I've had from my Libby so far, and if you'd go to the LOST forum and look under the mileage discussions, you'll find that I've been posting there for some time now.
