04 Inline 6, Had a TPS fault code so I removed throttle body cleaned it and changed sensor, erased code. Took it for a test drive and noticed temp was lower than normal, about 170, usually around 200. Next day set a P1281. So I'm assuming thermostat. I need reassurance that nothing involved with R&R of throttle body could make this suddenly happen CORRECT ? Just seems odd it happened right after. I sure am tired of working on this thing. I normally don't believe in coincidence.

Pretty sure that the throttle body has nothing to do with your thermostat sticking open.... Only thing that I can possibly think of is if somehow you disturbed the wiring to the engine coolant temperature sensor but that's really a reach....

I agree timing concern - happening right after working on vehicle;

The T'Stat is fast easy common where as circuit checking - getting wiring dia for TB and ECT together checking for common connections splices and grounds is time consuming -

I would do T'stst. clear code and operate... I would call this a second opinion. :)

There is an air intake temp sensor near the TB, but it wouldn't coincide with P1281.

I'd be unplugging the coolant sensor and PCM plug ends and test the continuity on each wire and check for shorts as well before swapping parts, that does run through some pretty hot area's and may have gotten enough of a bump to work it's way through some burnt wire sheathing or the retention clip in the sensor connector end could have broken and the connector pin(s) may have backed out a little if tugged on making a poor connection.

That's quick, and free to do before a t-stat or new sensor. OP if you need to know which PCM plug sockets to probe for the other end just say so be glad to look it up for you and OldWJ's is pretty good about wiring help to.

seen that and worse...

thermostat an old old part design and so problematic, has me only asking for OEM T'stat - no idea why they cant get it right.

perfect time for a flush!!
