Clicking noise from front wheel

So, I've had this clicking noise coming from the front passenger wheel area. It only happens if the jeep has been sitting for a few hours, and goes away after a few miles of driving. It only happens when I'm on the gas, as soon as I let off and coast it goes away. It is speed sensitive and clicks faster with speed.

Just had the cv axle replaced thinking it would fix it, but the noise is still there. Any ideas where to look next?

I have the exact same problem with my 2005 WK. Happens during turning and straight acceleration. After i've been driving for a bit it doesnt really happen much anymore. Checked all the cv joints and nothing looks bad. Boots are still intact. My next guess is the wheel bearing. Any ideas people?

wheel bearings always start as a slight click that can last for a long time. once the damage starts to spread it starts to become a soft grumble. then a growl. then it seizes. Under normal use modern bearings easily last 100,000 miles, and on a passenger car 200+, or life of the car. BUT, spacers, offsets, and submersion changes all of that quickly. IDK if ours are sealed or serviceable... serviceable is nice but i know ZJ's were sealed and "money."

I've done as much research as I possibly can on here. I really can only duplicate the problem when braking or turning up onto a driveway. I'll usually get like 5 clicks at a rate of about 2-3 clicks per second driving at about 5 mph. Then it stops. I don't think it is the sway bar bushings cause its not a clunk when I hit a bump. It honestly might have something to do with my rotors and brake pads. I've been starting to get some vibrating in the brakes under heavy braking.

If anyone has any fixes they found PLEASE let me know.

It sounds like you're headed in the right direction. Have you taken off the wheel to see? When mine was clicking, it was bc of a seized lug stud.

Here is what I would do, Kingpin. I would start by grabbing a 12 rack of bud bottles, then take off the two front wheels. After the wheels are off and the Jeep is on jackstands make sure everything is tight to SPEC. With a main focus on the caliper mounting bolts.

see if that helps...make sure brakes, rotors and calipers are all tight to spec.

I prefer miller, but I get your drift. Since the CV was just replaced its gotta be bearings or brake system

When CV joints go bad, can it cause vibration at a specific speed, and what does it cost to fix the front CV joints? Sorry to hijack, having the same problem, and thought it might be the CV joint.

Well, it got worse on the interstate this morning, so I pulled over and crawled under the jeep to find a 4" gash in the CV Boot with grease all over the inside of my wheel well. Ran it by Pep Boys and got the whole half shaft replaced with labor for around $200. I considered doing it myself, but I don't have the time of requipment for it. Let's hope it stops the steering wheel vibrations. Also got the tires rotated and balanced again.

I wanted to add this video of the sound my car is making during turns and sometimes while driving straight. This video is of a sharp turn left. Sorry about the sound, you may have to turn your speakers up a bit. Is this the type of sound you heard or was it different? Also I want to add that I've checked all of the CV boots (inner and outer) on each front axle and nothing appears to be ripped or gashed.

Could not hear the video... But anyway, I had a clicking that changed with the rpm on the tires. Right front, only turning... Ended up the cable jacket in wheel well was hanging a bit loose and the tire was rubbing on it .. Wish it were that easy all the time, but of course not...

Reminds me of a noise my girlfriends car had. Don't know if it's possible with the wk as I can't recall how the wheel well liners are set up, but her bottom rivets for the liners had broken loose, so as you'd gain speed the wind would pull it back into the tire and you'd hear a noise. When you'd pull over to look it had shifted back into place cause there was no wind pressing it back into the wheel. Took a while before I figured out what it was.

May be a far shot but sometimes it's the easy things.

I was only going about 5 mph in that video. I thought something might be loose so the other day I jacket it up and first tried yanking on the tire up and down, left and right, and in and out. There was no wiggle anywhere. Then I made sure all the bolts were tight and that no panels, cables, etc. were loose. My only assumptions then is that its the CV joint or the wheel bearing.

Mine makes the exact same noise and it only does it around 5mph. I've heard on here that the jeep logo on the brake caliper can cause the sound. I just ordered some Stillen rotors from kolak and plan on popping the jeep caliper cover off while im in there. Seems like something easy to try...

Old thread so i don"t know if you have fixed your problem. I had the same kind of noise on mine about a week after I bought it. Clicking on acceleration like a bad CV joint on a front wheel drive both half shafts were tight, but the front drive shaft had a little wiggle in it. upon removing it to replace the shaft I discovered the U-joint was bad binding up then releasing the CV causing the clicking. Hope this helps.

New Front CV Axle Clicking noise in 08 WK

Hello All,

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to share my recent problem with a front left axle shaft. I recently put a 2" lift in my 08 WK, the lower strut bolt was frozen and had to be cut out, in doing so I nicked the cv boot so I figured best just to replace the old axle with a new one, after completing the lift and putting in the new axle I had a click from the front left new axle, worse around a turn, but would still continue under acceleration. I looked online and found this thread but never found anyone with the exact same scenario as mine. I figured it must have been a defective axle from Advanced Auto so I ordered a new one and swapped it in, still had the exact same noise. I was still convinced it had to be an CV so I just ordered a boot to fix the original axle shaft and put that back in, problem fixed. Conclusion is the after market shafts can't handle the angle on the inner joint with a 2" lift. If or when the joint wears out I will plan to replace it with a Mopar shaft from Rock Auto. The after market shafts probably work fine with no lift, I've used them all the time in other vehicles but in a WK I would recommend Mopar. Now the jeep drives awesome on the lift with new tires!
