Cautionary Warning: "Goodyear Fortera HL" tires (with pics)

So I recently found out (during an inspection) that my tires are borderline bald, despite the tires being barely 3 years old.

I purchased a set of the "Goodyear Fortera HL" tires back in June 2018, and at the time the mileage on my WK was 169k miles (as shown). Take note of the current mileage of around 191k miles, which means these tires supposedly wore themselves out after only a whopping ~20k miles...

By the way, other than a roadtrip to Utah in August of 2018, I don't really drive my Jeep very "hard" or "rough". I use it as a daily driver/grocery-getter and mostly drive under 50 MPH, and most of my trips are less than 10 miles away from where I live :dunno:

Needless to say, I'm suddenly in the market for a new set of tires

Any suggestions for a good, affordable tire brand that actually LASTS? Also, is there any way I can possibly get free tires per some warranty/hidden legalese I don't know about? 3 years and less than 30k miles sounds like an awfully short lifespan for "new" tires...

Most causes of early tire wear failures are due to mis-alignment / suspension issues and poor rotation schedules. I can see just by your pics that you have issues to take care of before buying new tires . The pic of the rear tire shows cupping and feathering which is usually caused by worn shocks and suspension components or possibly a bad hub bearing assembly. The front looks better but still worn more in the center then the edges which usually means you drive overinflated but also you have some minor feathering as your tread edges are rounded on the outsides.

Get yourself a real tire gauge so you can see in 32nds the difference across the whole tire And you’ll probably see that where the tire isn’t worn down from rubbing, your about 8-9/32 which is still 2/3 of original tread.

Discount tire is great about pro rating price adjustments on tires that didnt get full mileage. What was the mileage warranty on these tires? Go talk to them. FYI I have run 5 sets of Yokohama Geolander on various 4x4's over the years. Allways exceeded the printed mileage warranty. And I drive hard.

Hey all, just thought I would take a few more quick photos this morning in the parking lot. The original photos I posted were from the driver's side, but these ones I'm posting today are from the passenger side.

Also included some further-away photos of the driver's side tires.

As for the manufacturer warranty, I'm looking at the original receipt and it reads as follows: "TIRE MILEAGE WARRANTY: 60000"

You’re going to have a hard time getting warranty when you either haven't been rotating your tires or have suspension or alignment issues. ( I would say both in this case) . The leading edge of that rear tire is feathered to nothing as well and some of the traction lines are completely gone ... Normal tire wear doesn't look like that .

Just throwing this out there….but did anyone else notice the weather checking on those tires? Can you see the date code on the tires? Judging by the weather cracking, and it’s only a judgement, they look way older than 3 years. I’m guessing 7 years or so. Which means they were sitting on the shelf for 4 or so years…..

Can you post a pic of the date codes on all 4 tires?

Out of curiosity, I just Googled "p245/65r17 goodyear fortera hl reviews" and it looks like a good amount of people also complaining about the low lifespan of these tires :surprise:

It appears this is just a cheaply made product (I guess? lol), here are some snippets from the general public...

"These tires are very low quality. Lasted only 30K. Very cheap made"

"On a Toyota Highlander, South Florida with proper tire rotation we only reached 40,000 miles before hitting the wear bars in the tread. They are completely worn, practically bald."

"I have about 34,000, miles on them and I am getting close to the wear bars."

"Don't buy these, mine look bald at 35,274. Get better tires. OR buy these knowing they will barely get to 40,000. Other than tread life, they were great."

"I would not buy this tire again. My fuel economy has dropped 10-20%."

"buyer beware theses tires only last 20,000 max... put 4 of these tires on twice, both times only lasted 20,000 miles 2 years don't buy"

"These tires are good until they wear out... I had to replace them once after about 10,000 miles and got new ones under the warranty, but now I need to replace them again after only another 14,000 miles!"

"Not very durable, damage easily, tread wears poorly, and winter traction poor. "

"Second set of these tires. They perform well, but only last about 38,000 - 40,000 miles, even with normal use, correct pressure and regular balance, rotation and alignment."

"Tires are not designed for Houston, Tx weather. 100% driven on pavement and only made it 30,000 miles

"These tires will not last more than 32,000 miles,. I have purchased them twice on a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven less than 10,000 miles a year in stop and go traffic on the highway. Rides smooth, no noise, good handling but wears out fast."

"I can't believe how fast these tires go bald!! My girlfriend has these on her Grand Cherokee and they are absolutely horrible!! I'm not one to sit and write reviews but after having to replace them after one year and now have to replace again only 9 months later i hope to save someone the headache and total waste of money!! They didn't even last 15,000 miles. Avoid these tires at all cost!!!!!"

"The tires don't last! Wore out at 18,000 miles."

"They were recommended to be changed at the second rotation. Didn't come close to the 60,000 mile rating. I had them less than 2 years and only put 14,000 miles on them. They were not abused at all. Don't buy."

"The worst tires I have ever had. They have 60,000 mileage warranty. I purchased in April 2013, it is now November 2015. I have driven 10,000 miles and the tread is worn well over half on each tire. Very upset"

"These tires have 20,700 miles on them and are nearly worn to the wear bars."

"Lasted less than 3 years / 30,000 miles. "

Those Fortera tires came on my Grand Cherokee from the factory and I got about 55,000 miles out of them. They were decent street tires but I was not impressed with them, I then purchased Goodyear wrangler all terrain adventure tires. I have been very happy with them, I occasionally go off road and tow quite a bit and there is about 60-70% life left on them and I just hit 70,000 miles.

My factory Goodyear Fortera's lasted about 40K miles. They were comfortable and quiet, but lackluster in all other respects.

I replaced them with Michelin LTX M+S and got >90K miles from them, They were slightly noisier as they are light truck tires. Second set of Michelins are installed now with over 10K miles. Good road/highway tire. I try to stay within 10K miles limit for periodic rotations and alternate between a F-R and X-pattern rotation scheme. Michelin tires have never been a problem for me.

Just my 2-cents worth of WK experience.

I run 245/65/17 yokohama geolanders on my 07 GCwk hemi overlander. so far this is the 4th set on various 4x4'sand I'm well pleased. They are rated for 60k and I ususualy get about 50 -55 k out of a set. Since I buy them from Discount tire, there is always some cost adjustment on the new tires. Im not easy on the Jeep. Most driving is freeway and long distance. an average trip is from Seattle to Sacramento in about 11 hrs.

2022 update: replaced the tires in my original post with some "thick" Cooper tires I bought online - feels much better, and looks better too

Completely worn out in less than 3 years of very light-duty/non-offroad "drive down to the nearby grocery store" driving on paved roads?? Goodyear Fortera brand is trash lol, won't be buying again
