I thought I saw a write up on removing the end caps on an XJ. I was going to pull mine off so that I can spray them with some satin black krylon fusion and wanted to make sure I knew how they cam off befor getting started so that my project will be as short as possible. I have looked and it looks like just 2 bolts in the rear, the front looks like 2 bolts plus several rivets holding them to the lower facia and bumper. If these were coming off permanaently I wouldnt worry but I want them to go back on when I'm done.

Any help appreciated.

Also I used the side trim as test pieces to make sure I like the way the paint is going to look and now I am considering putting them back on. Opinions?

From the '99 factory service manual:

FRONT BUMPER END CAPS

REMOVAL
(1) Remove the rivet attaching the end cap to the
air deflector.
(2) Remove the bolts and nuts attaching the end
cap to the bumper (Fig. 1).
(3) Pull back the wheelhouse liner and remove the
screws attaching the end cap to the front fender.
(4) Lifting the end cap from the bottom, tilt
slightly upward and slide it outward to disengage the
retainer tab from the bumper (Fig. 2).
(5) Separate the end cap from the bumper.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position the end cap on the bumper and engage
the retaining tab.
(2) Install the screws attaching the end cap to the
front fender.
(3) Install the bolts attaching the end cap to the
bumper. Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (7 ft. lbs.) torque.
(4) Install the rivet attaching the end cap to air
deflector.

REAR BUMPER END CAPS

REMOVAL
(1) Remove the bolts and nuts attaching the
underside of the end cap to the bumper (Fig. 5).
(2) Remove the screw attaching the front of the
end cap to the underside of the quarter panel.
(3) Lift the end cap slightly upward and slide it
rearward to release it from the retainer.
(4) Separate the end cap from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position the end cap on the rear of the retainer
and the outer edge of the bumper.
(2) Slide the end cap forward onto the retainer.
Ensure the end cap overlaps the lip of the rear
wheelhouse liner.
(3) Install the screw attaching the front of the end
cap to the underside of the quarter panel.
(4) Install the bolts and nuts attaching the under-
side of the end cap to the bumper.

Hope that helps. If you weren't 93 miles away according to Google maps I would come help you. :D

Thanks for the info. I will have to figure something out to replace the rivets that hold the air dam to the bumper and end caps or just leave it off. I figured it was pretty simple but didnt want to start it in the case that it wasnt.

I have family up near oneida, Great lake to fish on, I need to get back up there sometime.

had to remove the rear bumper on my 99 to install hitch clips/strips....hard part is getting the forward section into the body clip ...i almost removed the rear flare , but at the last instant they went on , and caught all 3 tabs propperly...this week at work i plan on installing a s/steel small pop rivet into it were it wraps the inner wheel plastic...just to make things tighter....mark...

I'm not sure what best way to remove a rivet is, but if you can do it without damaging anything, couldn't you just rivet it back on?
