Made a short road trip today 1.5 hrs each direction; about 200 miles. On fhe way out, the check engine light blinked a couple times but stayed off. On the way back, it blinked again a few times then went solid. There did not seem to be any change in performance. Has me a little confused. Should I take it to dealer to get checked, or is it safe to have an auto store check with a code scanner? This is a 4.0 motor with about 125,000 mi.

Turn your key on and off three time without starting the engine and look at the odometer and see if any codes flash. If so post hem here and we will help you.

I didn't know you could do that. I had 2 codes: P0300, P0306. Do I need to go to a place like auto zone or advanced auto go get this cleared or look for other codes? I heard it was not good to use their scanners. Also, this is a 99 4.0. Looking to codes up it says random misfires and misfire in cyl. 6. I didn't notice anything nor did it give me any issue this morning driving it? Where do I go from here?

A blinking CEL means its seeing a misfire. Check the codes and report back.
It just means that the vehicle is running so poorly that severe damage to the catalytic converter is imminent. Typically extreme heat by a lot of unburned fuel running through the exhaust or a clogged exhaust will cause this.

My truck is doing the same thing again. Check engine light came on again. Happens during highway driving, starts blinking, then stays on. It drives fine and smooth. I previously changed plugs and checked most things from the Misfire thread. Wrapped fuel rail cause we thought the exhaust manifold was cooking the gas to the injectors, and that worked for a couple weeks and CEL went away. Seems if I don't go to work where I have to take a highway with some steep grade hills, i'm fine. But, as soon as I have to hit the gas hard, CEL blinks then comes back. Oh, and I also got a new high flow cat and exhaust put on yesterday. Codes are p300, p302, p304, p305 and p306. Running out of ideas here
