I'm interested in putting a better muffler or something on my jeep, but i'm scared of being mistaken for a Saturn with dual Cherry Bombs out the back... Are there any mufflers or exhaust systems out there that really make the Xj sound nice? I'm thinking about running a single pipe, ~2.5" or something...
Any recommendations?

Flowmaster of course. Thats what all us Jeepers use. Well there is also Borla and Magnaflow, but I'll stick to the Flowmaster.

2.5 is fine, anything bigger and you'll loose to much backpressure. I was going to put on dual tailpipes, but it was gonna be like 300 to custom fit the pipe, so I said hell no, I'll get tires instead, haha

Ms, You mentioned that if you go over 2.5" pipe you will loose too much back pressure. I have run a single glass pack right off the cat. and put a 45 degree pipe off the end and pointed it torwards the ground. Is this hurting my performance? I figured there was enough restriction in the cat and manifold. Am I right or wrong?

Dont worry this setup is not permanet I just can't afford a 40 series this month and I had the glasspack just sitting in my garage so I figured id try it:)

Thanks,
Dave

I'm not exactly sure, but when I was thinking of a 2.5" or 3" exhaust everybody was telling me not to go over 2.25" due to the loss of backpressure. You should be fine though since the cat is restricting the flow.

i have the rusty's exhaust with the flowmaster. i also removed the catalitic converter. it sound real good and has a rumble not like those annoying ricers. Im adding my pace setter header that should really run sweet

You might want to add that it is illegal to take off your catalitic converter. It's there for a reason.

when i get a jeep ill go with dynomax just to be different. i hear they rumble pretty good but arent annoying on the highway. Ive got true dual flowmasters on my 350 V8 doesnt sound as loud as i wanted it at all, virtually none existant down the highway, especially over the hum of my tire.. Maybe if it was single pipe it would help it out... Headers help out ALOT.

sorry about hijacking but what flowmaster muffler would you use matt?

yeah your right no cat is illegal and at the time i did it my old one rusted out and i couldnt afford a new one some day i will get one though

I run a Pacesetter header, 2.5 pipe all the way back, no cat, and a 40 series which just has a turn-down on it. Great performance gain, so I obviously didn't lose backpressure. If I could do it again, I'd get a dual outlet. Dual 2.5" openings is like having one 5" opening, a lot louder. But...I like it loud.

I've been kicking around the idea myself. Been looking at the kits from rusty's offroad. I noticed he has a choice between the Flowmaster deltaflow series 50 or the Dynomax UltraFlo. I"m wondering which will give the deepest/best tone, and right volume. None of the exhaust soundclips pages I've been to show what a jeep 4.0 engine will sound like with EITHER exhaust. I'd love to be able to hear both for comparison. I know soundclips dont tell all, but they would be a starting place. I don't have the money or the time to buy both and compare.

Another question, would be, after the upgrade, will I still be able to pass PA's emission requirements?

I think I have the 50 series, I forget, that was like my first mod. I've noticed at high rmps its not that loud, but low and under load rpms, it roars. Also it sounds alot louder outside, obviously, when someone else is driving. So its hard to tell what your vehicle sounds like going down the highway unless your next to it.

Personally, the best sounding I6 exhaust is...none. Haha but I like it loud. I run the rusty's exhaust system, and I like that sound, and it's a great performance enhancer.

Hey 91XJLimited - do you have a pic of your set up? I'm curious what your turn-down looks like. I wanted to do this but there's nothing to hold the muffler up, other than the pipe from the cat, and i didn't feel like rigging up some saftey wire or somethin...

PS
For people with aftermarket headers - how do you like em? Good performance? Do they alter the sound in any way?
Thanks

Heh. It is where I live, but not where my vehicle is registered...

Mission, there should be a picture of it somewhere in the link in my signature. I'll edit this post once I find it to give you a direct link.

As you can probably tell by my signature I'm running borla. Borla is $$, but I do like the sound of it. A nice rumble at idle and when you get on the gas it gets loud, but not too loud IMO. A buddy of mine w/ a '95 is running a cat-back Magna-flow. Honestly, the only time I hear his exhaust is at idle, when he's on the gas it's nothing but his tires (33's). Flowmaster would be a cheaper muffler in terms of price, and sound just as good as Borla, again IMO. Let us know on what you decide.
