BCM Replacement

I'm needing to replace the bcm on my wife's '02 Liberty. Does anyone know if I can replace the bcm with one from a salvage yard or do I have to buy a whole new unit from a dealer? I'd rather take the cheaper route, but my dealer here is telling me I'd have to replace it with a new one and that a used one is not reprogram able. I don't care about it being vin specific and showing the right mileage. I have a newer motor in it now so the mileage that is showing isn't even for the current motor that I have in it. I called a different dealer and was told that it should work as long as it is from a vehicle with the same options that my wifes has.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Just so everyone know in case somone experiences the same issue. You can swap in a used bcm from another Liberty. A local salvage yard here allowed me to go into their lot and pull what I need from Liberty's they had. It worked perfectly. So don't listen to a dealer when they tell u that u have to purchase a new one and have it programmed with ur vin. $25 and I'm back in business!

Is the mileage correct on the odometer? This is what the experts say.I hope your right, because it will help a lot of people,The BCM is called the CCN also:

On this system the instrument cluster
can be considered the body control
module (BCM) similar to passenger
cars. It is also referred to as the cabin
compartment node (CCN), mechanical
instrument cluster (MIC) or the electromechanical
(EMIC) cluster. For the
purpose of this article, it will be referred
to as a CCN.
Dodge calls the CCN a 'smart cluster'
because it receives data from other
modules, processes the information and
displays it. For example, vehicle speed is
received over the bus network from the
powertrain control module (PCM) and is
processed and displayed by the CCN.
When the vehicle is built in the factory
and the vehicle is operated initially, the
vehicle identification number (VIN) is
electronically burned into it. The CCN
also stores the official mileage for the
vehicle. If the CCN has to be replaced,
the replacement CCN must be ordered
with the correct VIN and mileage. Fault
codes can be set by swapping in used
parts such as the PCM or the CCN.
The headlamp and multifunction
switches are hardwired to the CCN.
The headlamp switch receives a 5-volt
reference voltage from the CCN. The
CCN can determine the position of
the headlight switch based on this
multiplexed (MUX) voltage signal. The
CCN diagnoses the turn signal and
hazard input circuits using a diagnostic
resistor and provides diagnostics for
the headlamp switch circuit. If the CCN
detects a fault in the headlamp switch
circuit, it turns on the exterior lights as
a default and sets a diagnostic trouble
code (DTC).

I do not believe that as regards the KJ you can refer to the BCM as a CCN....I have never seen any reference to a CCN in any of the KJ documentation I have read. The cluster is seperate from the BCM although they talk to each other and the cluster stores the mileage while the BCM mainly concerns itself with locking/unlocking the doors, having a delay on the headlights turning off after turning off the ignition etc.

If the PCM (ECM in a CRD) is replaced then the VIN and the SKIS anti-theft code have to be programmed in it....as well as unique calibration data for the injectors etc.;)

The BCM basically sits on the rear of the fuse panel that is inside the cabin.
So you unscrew the internal fuse panel and flip it over and there lies the Junction Block( has some relays and circuit breakers) with the BCM plugged onto it.

You can download the relevant year Service Manual here:http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ

The BCM generally has to be programmed for some functions such as the hazard lights flashing when you remotely open the doors and a few other things so some things may change if you replace the BCM with a used one but the VIN and mileage are not needed.

I wanted to post this for anyone else having to do this. I was putting in a stereo on a 2003 liberty we just bought for our daughter when i touched 2 live wires together. Then the wipers didn't work, speedo, heater would cut off when radio was on, and info center was out. After search net I guessed it was the BCM. I was terrified to have to replace such a unit with limited information. Dealer said it was $750 just for the unit and it had to be flashed. I saw this post and figured I would take a chance and do it myself. I bought a used unit off of Ebay for $65. The important things to pay attention to (or I would have done differently) is you don't need to remove the whole fuse box. I did and it was a PITA to get out, I broke the brake switch and scraped my hands badly. I paid attention that you have to make sure the model numbers match (that way all accessories are the same, and still work) meaning you are putting the exact same one in that is being replaced. You can unscrew the BCM from the fuse box, once the fuse box is loosened. I put my new unit in and it worked just fine. I took the old keyless unit and snapped it into the new BCM and everything worked just fine again. So it doesn't need "flashed" Odometer isn't affected. It was fairly easy to do.

Bear in mind that the early model KJs had the remote Lock/Unlock receiver plugged onto the the back of the BCM...about the size of a cigarrette package so it is easy to swap these over so that your existing remote works.

Newer KJs have this receiver built into the BCM so in this case you probably have to have the new BCM programmed to be able to use your existing remote to unlock/lock the doors.;)

BCM replacement 2004 Liberty

Hello
I have 2004 Liberty with a bad BCM. I have read the post here and decided to locate and purchase a used BCM. I have it and want to install it, however I cannot see how to get to it to remove and replace. I have looked on youtube and cannot find any how to video's either.
Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for the link. I had already viewed many of those links that came up from your post. They show the BCM, talk about removing it for the fuse box, removing the keyless entry, etc. All helpful, but I havent found any that tell me how to get to the BCM to actually be able to remove it.
The auto salvage place where I purchased the used BCM was helpful in that he told/showed me how to remove the threshold covering from the door, then the side panel where the hood latch is located and also the plastic piece under the the steering wheel at the knee. He suggested from there to youtube it. However, from there I do not know how to proceed, I do not seem to be much closer. I haven't been able to find any how to video. Is there any more detailed step by step instructions available?
The dealership wanted $655 for a new one, then $300 more to remove, replace and program it. I am hoping to be able to do this myself. Obviously with some detailed help for someone who has done it before. Thanks again for your help.
