Similar problems - no codes

Specific questions:
Problem 1. TC WILL NOT STAY LOCKED UP AFTER FULLY WARMED UP: I have installed a switch to wire around the TCM and to supply power directly to the TC solenoid. For the last 25K miles, this is what I have relied on when doing highway driving. So, under this operating scenario, if the TC will then lock up and stay locked up, can the solenoid be bad? I'm thinking not likely but am interested in other opinions. Maybe there is a difference in voltage and a higher voltage makes a failing solenoid work? But it is my understanding that all of the tranny solenoids receive battery voltage, which is what the TC solenoid is receiving now.

Problem 2. TRANNY HAS INTERMITTENT SHIFTING PROBLEMS/ISSUES: a. Sometimes it will stay in 3rd or 4th gear at a stop light; b. Frequently will grab for a lower gear (just a split second shift and then goes back to where it belongs) when driving around town; and c. Will spontaneously shift into a low gear when driving at highway speeds. Item C is the most problematic and I have installed another switch to deny power to the TCM which puts the tranny in manual shift mode.

All of the tranny problems started in conjunction with a severe overheating (towing another car up I-80 from Sacramento to Reno in 100* heat). The shifting problems seem like there could be a loose connection or a wire that is shorting out?

So for the last 25K miles, when I got up to speed on a highway, I would flip both switches and it was and is a beautiful thing.

WHAT I HAVE DONE:
I disco'd the TCM and drove around long enough to conclude that it was truly an electrical/electronic problem and nothing basically wrong with the tranny.

I changed out the TPS early in the game. No change.

I have adjusted the throttle kick down cable in accordance with instructions. No change.

I have a Standard Parts VSS sensor coming in the mail and will see if that helps - don't know why I didn't order this sooner - I guess things were going too good!

I pray that the VSS, after all these miles, solves the problem. Assuming that it doesn't, that leaves the TCM, the solenoids and possibly a bad connection somewhere.

Your thoughts are welcome.

I buy repair and sell quite a few XJS and have allways stayed away from ones with tran problems. I now have the confidence to fix many that I usually pass up,I just passed up last week a 99 with the same issues that I could have gotten for 750 darn. Thanks again for the great write up.
So I should send you my Paypal address?? LOL I kid, I kid..glad it helped

so i just changed the solenoids but now the connectors with the clip broke so now the wiring just slides in and out...what do i do now??
I had one break too, but I widened the metal "connector" inside the plastic connector and it is still holding to this day..

I have a 2000 XJ sport automatic, and I got a code referring to the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid. The write up for replacing these is fantastic, but which one specifically is the tcc solenoid?
Why not replace all 3 since you are in there anyway? :)

All I have to say is "YOU DA MAN!". Thanks this is why I joined the forum.
Man, I have been away for a while concentrating on being the VP of my Jeep club, but I am SO GLAD this has helped people. :)

Help please!:)

I seem to have the same issue and codes, I have checked all the local dealerships, parts places and junkyards and came up empty. I do have dirty tranny fluid and would like to change it, but think the solenoids are bad too since this started happening over a 2 day period where it went from intermittent to not downshifting on its own at all.

I really need my truck to work right, should I do a tranny flush to see if that fixes it first? Is there a way to clean the soleniods? or hook them up to a 9 volt to see it they work or something since I don't have a MM?

So if I do order from here:

http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=2&Category_Cod e=A340solenoid

Which one do I order? My jeep is a 98 and it's a bit confusing to me.

This is an awesome write up. Its inspired me to give it a try. Do you have any pictures of the neutral safety switch placement and replacement procedure? Also what esle should you replace once you drop the pan? I wont have access to another car once I start so I need to make sure I pick up any extra parts I could possibly need before I start.

On the 97 and up, the TCU is located under the dash on the right side of the steering column. I could not find a diagram that showed how to test the TCU on a 97 up Cherokee, so I did the next best thing.

John
Sorry if this has been covered already but on my '97 the TCU is on the left side of the column, up high. After you disconnect the harness, with the lock facing up you'll see two rows of thirteen cavities. The last three on the right of the top row are for the solenoids (#11, 12 and 13). With a digital meter grounded to the chassis or negative post of the battery you can check the resistance of the solenoids. The resistance should be between 11-15 ohms, minus the resistance of your meter's leads and some resistance of the connectors and wires.

The solenoids can also be checked at the 6-way connection at the firewall on the passenger side. If one or more of the solenoids are way out of range it can justify pulling the pan and checking them directly (male electrical connector to bracket) before spending money on new ones.

It seems like some people have trouble with a dipstick bracket. Is that tube meant to be able to come apart right at the trans pan fitting? Are those little bumps 3 screws? OR do you twist it off?

Also, why does the replacement solenoid look nothing like the OEM one?
One looks rounded, the other looks square. Or are we just looking at different sides of an identically shaped part?

Ground wire. Is that black wire being snaked behind the other clip on the left and then routed back to the bolt (just becuase it's too long?)
See purple line on the right image.

So i am going to revive this to ask about my codes. It started with p0758 Soldenoid b electrical. So i changed the TPS to eliminate the possibility of it. I then ordered all 3 solenoids and changed them. Well the check engine light went off and drove it today. It went well for 50 miles and i was pumped thinking it was fixed. Then all of a sudden CEL and when i hit about 35-40 mph it slips and wont shift into 4th gear. The new codes are P0758 and P0756.

P0756 is solenoid 2 stuck open/closed malfunction. What could this possibly be thanks so much!
