Hello,

i am new here… I have a 2022 High Altitude Jeep Wrangler. I had it in last oil change asking service dept to look at the Automatic start/stop function, as whrn you stop at a light the engine turns on and off for conservency. They told me it was because i was running my A/C and it will over ride the function. There are no indicator lights of anything not ffunctioning properly. It has yet to work even while the AC isnt running and i have told the dealership this. They have blown me off about it stating they are not sure what it could and dont bother looking into it further. Anyone else have this issue?

Have them test the batteries. One or both of them could be going bad. It's common in the Gladiators.

There is a whole list of things that will keep ESS from working. It will work with the AC on but not if the outside temp display is 80 deg or higher.

Possible Reasons The Engine Does Not Autostop Prior to engine shut down, the system will check many safety and comfort conditions to see if they are fulfilled. Detailed information about the operation of the Stop/Start system may be viewed in the instrument cluster display Stop/Start Screen. In the following situations, the engine will not stop:

• Driver’s seat belt is not buckled.
• Driver’s door is not closed.
• Battery temperature is too warm or cold.
• Battery charge is low.
• The vehicle is on a steep grade.
• Cabin heating or cooling is in process and an acceptable cabin temperature has not been achieved.
• HVAC is set to full defrost mode at a high blower speed.
• HVAC set to MAX A/C.
• Engine has not reached normal operating temperature.
• The transmission is not in a forward gear.
• Hood is open.
• Vehicle is in 4LO transfer case mode.
• Brake pedal is not pressed with sufficient pressure.

Other Factors Which Can Inhibit Autostop Include:
• Accelerator pedal input.
• Engine temp too high.
• 5 mph (8 km/h) threshold not achieved from previous AUTOSTOP.
• Steering angle beyond threshold.
• ACC is on and speed is set.

It may be possible for the vehicle to be driven several times without the STOP/START system going into a STOP/ START READY state under more extreme conditions of the items listed above.

your engine will last longer without that crappy feature
Your comment does not help the OP. Whether you like it or not, it's here to stay thanks to the greenies/tree huggers and their agenda (for the record, I think it's a dangerous "feature"). Lets try to help the OP as his issue could result in something more serious down the road.

Although I am not a big fan of start/stop in many vehicles, I want to know how this feature degrades engine life. Please explain.

This is spot on advice of how the system really works. Stop start can be finicky and not work at all through a drive cycle, or not work every time a stop is made in a drive cycle. The battery state of charge and reserve capacity are a huge part of it.

more serious then early engine failure that is about as serious as it can get, I guess short of a crash
OK, Seeing as you seem to know it all on the dangers of ESS to your engine, Please provide factual documentation of your accusations.

Oil is still in the engine and passages. It's not going to leak down at a stop light.

You can't answer the question.

I gave the OP a list of things to look at and things that keep it from operating. You have not.

I think we are done here.

OK, I have better things to do on my Saturday morning than clean up a thread that is 9 months dead. Stop the insults. If people can't simply state their points and leave the playground bullying behind, there will be vacations issued.

I understand that contributing posters are passionate and threads can go off the rails but if you can't simply state your case and leave out the personal attacks, then be an adult and don't post. Because you and Google or AI think something is true doesn't mean it is. Contrary to popular belief, the internet is not always right and neither are people trying to sell snake oil.

To the OP: Count it as a blessing. Many people come here trying to figure out how to disable this foolishness. I myself, am here to learn that. And you got lucky enough to get a Jeep where it is already disabled. If everything else works as it should, just be happy and live with it. And, if you ever figure out why it isn't working, post up and I'll do the same thing to my Wrangler.
