I ordered the Gates full kit (348390) from Rockauto. Has the bearing. I was just wondering if I need any special tools and how much work it is. It looks like I'll need some decent snap ring pliers, which I have been meaning to get anyway.

Also, got a new pressure hose and a cooler, so making a project of it.

I've done it. No special tools I can recall. I have snap ring pliers so I wouldn't remember needing them. IMS the bearing is a light press fit on the shaft but I was able to remove the old and install the new using various sockets and a big bench vice. It's not complicated. I'd be careful with the vanes during disassembly so you get them going back in the same orientation. Mine sprung a leak from the rear main housing seal after a couple years. I didn't recall catching the o-ring during assembly so you might want to keep an eye on it.

Doing it for the enjoyment is about the only reason to rebuild one on these rigs. I slapped in a new pump from the parts store last weekend. I bypassed the $59 one and went for the unit with the 2 year warranty for $149 just because I like to use good parts when I can.

Nah, it's way too much fun to get filthy, skin your knuckles, rip your clothes smack your head and bleed like a stuck pig. Then get hell from your better half for tracking in dirt, getting grease spread all over her laundry and missing a dinner date.
Not to mention, getting the wrong part, breaking the right part, drinking a beer (or six) and realizing that as you are on your back, deep under the truck, holding something heavy over your head, that you desperately need to go to the bathroom.

Well, there is another very valid reason, you KNOW what you wind up with. Instead of pulling stuff off repeatedly to get that warranty several times over, you learn the procedures, invest your time wisely, and more times than not wind up with a better product. Granted there are times when its just not possible, but if it is there is no harm in trying to do so. Lost arts,{in a way} is lost knowledge. Some things just can't be condensed into cost. If it was, then there wouldn't be a JS who figured out to resolder pcms, a ZeeJay's stalling list,a kg build thread among a myriad of others. The things they do save jeepers money, but they impart more than that, a more complete picture of just what a ZJ is and what makes it tick. So while it may be for fun{not so sure of that}, it shows more times than not inquisitiveness and creativity, which is far from being a waste of time.

Yeah. But as far as the power steering pump goes if it's leaking you're dollars ahead getting the rebuild kit. If it's making noise and hard parts are bad there's not much you can do. A quick Google doesn't turn up any parts for sale.
