Good day all. Having searched regarding problems with MDS solenoids going defective, it seems this often happened with the early 2011 and 2012 5.7 hemis.

Any comments on this?

Solenoids or do you mean lifters? I don't think I've read much about MDS solenoids.

The solenoids are under the intake manifold. You are not suppose to pry them as they snap off as in the video. If they break small pieces could get into the oil system. Tap them with a rubber mallet, and rotate side to side to break them loose. Good tip to get them out if they break.

Whats it doing? Low oil pressure, bad temperature sensor, incorrect oil, poor circuit can all be possible failure points. Are you getting a check engine light, any DTCs set?

Thanks for replies. Looking at buying a very low km 2010 WK, but the 2 rear MDS solenoids had electric faults causing the solenoids to "burn out" electric wise. The owner could not tell me why this happened. Both were replaced and motor is running fine. I am uncomfortable with 2 solenoids going defective on a one owner, agent serviced Jeep with less than 100 000km (not miles). The Jeep is spotless, but .......

Why would a solenoid become defective? I know incorrect oil can cause it, but it was serviced on time by agents.

The reason posted on the WK2 section, is that there are few VVT Eagle head motors in the WK model. So hoping to get a wider response on this WK2 section.

My 5.7 l Hemi is in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. It started running in limp mode a few days ago and I took it to the local auto parts store. They ran a scan on it. The scan showed it has a bad MDS solenoid and it has a miss in one of the cylinders. I'm going to buy the parts and replace them myself. Of course I watched a YouTube video which makes me an expert. Ha ha! More to follow.
