I recently bought a 2007 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 HEMI. What is the lifespan of these motors? are they reliable for the most part? it has 96,000 miles and from what I seen on the carfax it has been maintained but I dont have any of the service records other from what I can get from carfax!

Don't hold your breath. My daughter purchased a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 HEMI. She is a single parent and always had this maintained at the dealer. At 74,000 miles, one hydraulic lifter retainer let the lifter rotate. My daughter drove 10 miles home after it started to tick. She called me and I told her not to start the engine in hopes that the cam wouldn't be damaged. I have seen this several times before. Had it towed for repair but it also needed the cam and maybe some head repair according to the dealer. And the parts are on back order because there are so many with this problem. They estimated the repair cost (when they get parts ) to be between $4,000.00 and $6,000.00. No one should have to spend that kind of money to fix that young a vehicle with so few miles. This engine was not well thought out. They saved their business several dollars to cost the customer several thousand dollars. Please don't purchase another product from this corporation.

The 5.7L Hemi is a great engine. It paired with the 545RFE transmission and you will be on the road for quite some time. I have 120k miles on mine and have had no engine problems whatsoever. Vary rarely do we see any problems with these engines here on the forums.

That trans is made by Benz and is the same one they put in the dodge sprinter. That trans can be beaten to death and isn't going anywhere. I don't personally work on the 5.7 bc I'm a diesel tech but I have been told that we have 5.7's that come in with 300,000 and no rebuilds. Great engine and trans with proper maintenance and decent driving habits it could last until you get sick of it. I have 109,000, 70,000 prior owner, and the past 40,000 my lead foot and about 8,000 with a 2 bedroom uhaul trailer

Great example. All of my local PD have ditched crown Vic's for Chargers. Mainly because the Charger can haul as* after someone instead of the more sluggish Crown Vic (compared to Charger R/T). I've even seen some new Durangos out there for police departments!

I'm excited to see how these modern Hemi's hold up over time. From what I can tell, if you do the basic maintenance, it'll last a very long time. They gave my dad a Lifetime powertrain warranty on his Charger R/T, so that says something in of itself.

When you all say proper maintanence, what do you mean by proper? I mean I do oil changes every 3 to 5 thousand miles. I went 10 on my last car with full synthetic. I'm at 96,000 miles now and I plan on doing the 100,000 mile tune-up. Aside from the spark plugs what else should I do/have done?

Hand clean the back of the throttle body, get a catch can ASAP. Maybe have injectors checked making sure they're still spraying a good mist.

This is the best info you'll find really. http://wkjeeps.com/wk_maintenance.htm

Catch can is almost mandatory on a hemi....imo

Yeah there is a lot of maintenance for the HEMI that can be a bit spendy, but I'm a little over 145k and it's still a beast. I couldn't agree more with the gents above that a good cleaning of the injectors and throttle body are needed and finished up with a catch can. You should also plan on all fluids, filters (especially transmission x2), sensors (MAP, O2), valves (PCV, EGR), as well as all 16 spark plugs if you have no history about the vehicle. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but I did this on mine when I got it at just over 100k and I instantly gained 3 mpg.

Oh and do not let a dealer perform the N23 recall on your Jeep! Look up N23 here in JF and you will see why.!

I think if you've used syn oil consistently you may not have as much of an issue with oil build up on the throttle plate. I've been using M-1 5-20 since 25k miles when I bought it and have not had a problem with that. On the other hand with conventional oil on my late 80s Toyotas it was a chronic problem.

Agree on the catch can, a must. Clean your intake one time, and you'll know why.

AFAIK, the Hemi stalling issue is MY07 and aug- or sept-built MY08. Hemi tick is a sound. Hemi shudder is the feeling you get when a 360-hp motor rolls along at 1100 rpm.

In the year or so I've been here, I too have been (pleasantly) surprised at how few Hemis just die, without some whiff of suspicious engine mods--or river crossing.

I've got a 2008 about to push into 200,000 miles. Never had a catch can allthough im going to do some reaserch and possibly install one. No problems whatsoever so far! Only thing we've ever replaced is the heater core (and fluids obviously) oil every 3k, which annoyingly for me is about every 1.5 months.

176K on my '05. No catch can, just stuck with synthetic oil with the proper weight (changes every 7500 miles)

My mother over-heated the hell out of it about 80K miles ago, I thought the engine was toast, I had never seen an engine that boiled over. (she accidentally locked the trans in 1st and drove 15 miles in 102 degree temps. - long story. Poor woman felt awful)

New oil and new radiator fluid and she was back up and running just fine. I'm impressed with the engine

I bought a 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited brand new from the dealer in December, 2005 with the 5.7 Liter Hemi, and I have put 230,000 miles on it. The car looks and ran great until the transmission went a couple of weeks ago. I am putting a new transmission in it, but I am thinking about buying a new Grand Cherokee. I was thinking about going with the Eco Diesel for fuel mileage, but after reading some of the forums, I started reading about the Penstar, which has apparently also had problems, so I am inclined to live with the fuel mileage (and performance) of the Hemi at this point and go back with what I know works and hopefully get another 13 years and 230,000 trouble free miles.

I bought my 08 with the 5.7 2 years ago with 99k miles on it. I got a catch can and changed all the fluids and plugs, put a new belt and tensioner on, and so far so good. Full synthetic high mileage 5w 20 every 5k. I’m at 117k miles now
