We have a poll running regarding dropped valve seats in 4.7s: 4.7 Dropped Valve Seat Poll In this poll, you can vote whether or not you've experienced a dropped valve seat.

Within this thread, an interesting question was brought up:

What I'm interested in knowing is if certain years were more prone than others to dropping a seat.
I'm curious now too.

If your 4.7 has dropped a valve seat, vote the year. If you have not personally experienced a dropped valve seat, please do not vote. I enabled multiple votes for those who've experienced this more than once. Let's keep the arguments to a minimum.

No offense, but since it also happens in WKs, rams, etc your year poll will be kind pointless, no?

I know the hemi's they changed the specs for how tight the seats are pressed into the heads after a certain year but i dont recall seeing that about the 4.7.
If we are only curious about the correlation in WJs, since this is a WJ forum, then my years seem reasonable. That being said, I can easily edit in more years if everyone wishes.
Since this is a brand new thread with no votes, what's the consensus? Add more years or keep it WJ specific? I don't mind either way but would like to make changes before the poll takes off. Otherwise, the numbers will be skewed.

I'm leaning towards WJ specific years as well. If there's mutiny, we can always create a new thread in a more appropriate area.

I will sticky it for a little while. We try to avoid too many stickies in order to reduce clutter but I don't see why this can't be at the top for a few weeks.

The ones that will be missed are the ones that went to the scrap yard after engine failure without diagnosis. They may have thought it was another fault but it was too old and cost to much to repair. I know one that went to the breakers yard with about 200,000 on the clock. He put the rough running and low compression on number 5 down to a head gasket.... but as the Jeep was a mixture of mud and rust !!! it was not worth looking into......I think it was the dropped valve seat issue especially as three in our relatively small group have had seat drop in the last couple of years.

Should we make a poll to see if members want to make a poll about active member's engines? Haha!

One of the most amazing things I've ever seen is people hosting meetings for the sole purpose of planning meetings. Always baffles me.

All kidding aside, feel free to make whatever poll you see fit. Worst case scenario, it will just sink it's way to the bottom. Best case, we have a sweet set of stats. :highfive:

At least the seat in still in one piece unlike others I've seen where is in many pieces and embedded in the piston crown! Sometimes bits go into the inlet tract and manifold and get jammed in there....only to reappear to damage the freshly rebuilt engine....something to be aware off.

Yeah I hear you. One thought I had to help collect data would be if new subscribers were asked voluntarily to answer some basic questions when registering with the forum. It wouldn't be required and they could "skip" the steps, but it could help to gather more info. Not sure if that's possible or not.

That's a pretty big upgrade that likely wouldn't fly. You'd have to customize the questions per vehicle. Plus, people signing up typically dont want to spend much time doing so. We try to keep up on the FAQs and stickies for new users to look through, though I imagine most don't.

My Wife's 2004 Didn't drop a valve seat but blew a head gasket. I told my machine shop to go ahead and replace the seats anyway and his opinion was that if the head gasket hadn't blown I would have dropped a seat sometime later. Did a full rebuild including valve seats new rings polished crank It had blown a radiator about a year before and had overheated. The engine was rebuilt at 207537 miles and I finished installing it today, runs great. My wife likes her wj and doesn't like the looks of the WK and WK2.

Next 4.7 I work on will only have 6 cylinders (stroked 4.0) in my 89 wrangler/
