2017 3.6L Cold start up engine "death rattle" ** VIDEO**

Does anyone else have this "death rattle" on their 3.6L? I cringe every morning starting her up. Mine is a 2017. Purchased used in July. Now that the weather is turning colder here in NYC, the noise is more frequent....happens in the AM when first starting and after 8 hours at work....
In my 30+ years as a mechanic I cannot believe this is "normal" The only time I have heard this was on the initial start up of a fresh oil & filter change (until the filter fills up) or on an engine that is about to throw a rod out the side of the block....
can any one else confirm that they have this as well? I will be taking videos to document this as its driving me crazy

Death rattle doesn't seem to be a common problem although there have been a couple cams being chewed up. A single lifter tick mentioned now and then, phaser rattle now and then. The V6 oil pump/system is a little more complex than others in that its two stage and the pressure involves sensors and solenoids and the PCM... so a few things can go wrong. There are quite a few bits and pieces to the variable valve timing. I should say its pressure regulated by moving the vanes, and there are two pressure settings.

After you make sure you have the right oil in it, you may want to check the oil pressure. Should be at least 6 psi regardless.

I think it was fixed by 2017, but the drain back valve in the oil filter housing used to be easily damaged.

This engine calls for 0w-20 which is whats in there (Penzoil Platinum Full Synthetic) I have had both a genuine Mopar filter as well as a WIX premium for synthetic oils filter installed....still makes the noise.
Oil psi on the EVIC ranges from 30-80 psi

Heres a video. Im going to take a few of them to show to the dealer and see what they say.... Anyone else have this???

Sounds like it could be starter or starter relay related. Rattling in and out of engagement, staying engaged too long perhaps... but just a guess. Doesn't sound like a oil problem to me.

Trying to pinpoint this and have as much info as possible for the dealer. This time I got under truck & recorded. Disregarding the grunt I let out trying to scoot as far under truck as I could, you can hear what sounds like 2 sets of solenoid clicking. A faint few clicks before it starts and then a louder few clicks after it starts.
Much like Coldcase said its now not sounding as much as an oiling problem but more of an electrical issue maybe? Again will only do it on the first cold start...

Dealer visit update.

Today was the day. I had dropped off my truck Sunday night at the dealer. Dropped the keys in the night drop box & taped my very detailed note to the start button advising NO ONE to start the vehicle except the tech assigned to it.
Got a call at around 8:45am from the service writer verifying my complaints (second complaint I has was a chugging feeling when the engine restarted after an ESS shut down)
I texted him all the YouTube links I made of the noise when recording.
fast forward to 4pm...Get a phone call. Jeep is ready.....
Guess what?
"Technician found no rattlng noise...no problem found at this time"

I 100% expected nothing less, unfortunately. Funny thing is that the Porter that moved my Jeep later in the day after the "Tech" didnt hear anything said he heard it!!!
They did "flash the TCM" to hopefully take care of the ESS Chugging.

Speaking to the writer, we came up with another plan. For me to leave the Jeep again overnight next week (I needed the truck for work) Plan is to drop it off and have them put it on a lift and start it in the AM
Not sure if it will help since this is cold weather related & leaving in warm shop it might not do it.

Stay tuned....

Also got a call from Chrysler about the Star case they opened. I told them what happened & she said she would email me some more info...no email as of yet...

Still dealing with this. Trying to narrow down the location of the noise as well as try and reproduce it more than once of twice a day after sitting for 4 or more hours

This video was just taken about 20mins ago today. Jeep was sitting since 6:30 AM. Do approx 6 hours.
Definitely seems to be coming from drivers side valve cover area
Could it be a cam phaser or some sort of VVT solenoid?

It almost sounds like a louder version of the solenoid clicking in the beginning of the video...

that sounds like valve-train to me. I would try it again, but this time have your foot on the gas pedal slightly (while the engine is cranking) so that when it starts, the engine revs a bit higher. If the tapping frequency goes with the engine rpms, it could be evidence that its valve-train.
