I have the same problem! Can someone help?

 

I'm in the same boat. The last time I brought mine into a local 4x4 shop, and asked them to check the e-brake. He found the shoes were in pieces! They have to drain the diff and remove the axles in order to fix the parking brake. Then buy new fluid + friction modifier additive. He quoted me $350+ to fix it, and they only charge $50/hour labor. I opted to wait until I have some extra $ and will do it when my diff needs to be flushed/filled.

 

Something sounds strange to me. Maybe the '05 is different, but I was able to get to the e-brake shoes by removing the rear disk (which has the e-brake drum built into it). There was no diff or diff fluid involved at all. Unfortunately, the e-brake doesn't work much better than before. It really looks like a Rube Goldberg setup.

I just feel as if I don't have a parking e-brake at all. I mine as well just put it in Park and forget about using it because it rolls back either way.

 

You do not need to do that!. I just changed my parking brakes on my 03 libby - they were in pieces too. The assembly is inside of the rear rotor. Kind of a pain to get the springs back together, but not really that bad. take a picture before maybe.

Axle removal is the easiest and fastest way to replace the parking brakes.

Here's what you are working around/with
not on mine by the way, was doing this on a buddys

 

Had to change complete assembly on both sides

If you need to change the backing plate or it had rusted out like mine, you will have to remove the axle shaft connect to lug bolts. I had to change both complete assemblies, I hope yours is not a 2006 or 2007 model because the assembly for each side is $250 - my dealer quoted $375 each. After you slide the axle off, you can just rip off old parts as the new assembly comes with everything installed. You remove four nuts and disconnect the abs and cable. Clean everything up, then reinstall the four nuts the abs and the cable, slide the axle shaft back in and reconnect. There is a forum I saw that explains how to this somewhere. Then go back to putting the rotors, pads and calipers back on. I changed the calipers and the rotors and pads also because it was removing one side because it had a bad caliper that I discovered how bad the backing plate was. So now I have new parking brake assemblies new rotors, pads and calipers on the both sides of the rear. You can see by the pictures that I have the axle shaft slide out, since I am doing both sides, makes things easier, I am waiting for new seals to come in the morning because I figure since I have it apart, I might as well do that now, since they are only $20 each and with my luck, after having all of this apart one of them would start leaking in a month or two. I also had a caliper which is what started this project so when done it will be an entire new brake system since I doing both calipers, rotors and pads. I cannot drive because of the medicine I am taking and fighting lung cancer so I am doing all this to pass my 2006 Jeep 4x4 6 cylinder Liberty Renegade on to my only son who is about to turn 23.

Did it 2 days ago, no need to pull axel. There is a youTube vid. Super easy and parts were less than $30 at Autozone. The Frictuion liners had come off of the shoes and was making a clicking as wheel would rotate slow. Thought it was gonna be worse.
