So I got the header today. Here are some pics of it. Its a Pacesetter by the way.

I was looking over the construction and it seems pretty stout one thing that bothered me was the gap between the piping and the flange ( you can see it in the picture) so Im considering a little JBWELD work before taking it in tomorrow for the install. :2thumbsup:

Here is a pic of it and the down pipe it came with.

Hopefully the shop does a good job installing it. This is the first time I havent been able to do the work on the Jeep myself and Im pretty nervous, actually this is the first time hands other than mine have ever touched one of my cars...yikes....I dont like it but I cant weld and they are giving me a good deal on the install...

Also I am considering wrapping the header before they put it on...what do you guys think yea / nay ? More to come with the install tomorrow, as well as the sound, though until I get a catback thats not going to be too great

Looking at the pic of the flange/pipe joint - it should be ok. I can't see if there are any unusual thin spots or not but seems passable. It looks like the gap was filled fairly well and any thick weld bead (seam) on the outside should be strong enough for this application. I can't see a reason to fill it more, though you could remove that spatter some by scraping it off. Is it a gap or an offset? If they welded it correctly, the weld bead itself is at least twice as strong, if not more, than the steel material that was welded. If the welded joint should crack/break at any time in the future, it would definitely be due to a manufacturing defect (faulty welding). But I think you'll be fine.

There's mixed opinions on wrapping headers. Some say it's necessary to reduce heat around the header/manifold and reduce heat under the hood in general. Others insist that it's not prudent to trap in the heat and not allow the headers to cool on their own evenly. Because of all the stuff that passes over the top of the Manifold/Header, I'd say to go ahead and wrap them with Pro grade wrapping.

now thats the kind of advice Im looking for, more than anything I was worried about the gap because I was afraid it would disrupt airflow some. The welds are solid and as far as structural integrity the gaps dont bother me in the least. Ive heard the same things about wrapping headers, which is why I asked, I have also heard that it is good to wrap them because it allows them to hold more heat longer on the inside thereby cooling more slowly and reducing the risk of cracking. So Ive decided to wrap them tomorrow. Thanks again

You're welcomed. That was $8k worth of Welding training put to practical use.

So I hit the last button on the my replys page. This is what came up. Wow it's been a long time since I owned that jeep. Feels like a hundred years. Well I guess I will let you know what happened. The shop couldn't do the work because a bold was broken off in the block. So I ended up doing it myself. I drilled and tapped the block and installed the newly wrapped header.

Two months later two of the pipes on the header fell off and the other two had huge holes in them. What happened? It seems the header wrap soaked up water from a creek trail and mixed with the heat plus a sponge being constantly held against the header accelerated the rusting of the metal to light speed.

In short if you are going to put a header on a jeep that sees alot of water don't wrap it.
