Hello All,

My YJ has the brake light switch style that attaches to the brake booster pushrod. Since my ford 8.8 swap, the brake lights no longer work properly. I've managed to get them to come on, but it practically requires standing on the brake pedal before enough motion occurs to trigger the brake lights. Loving everything except the legality here.

I've got a few questions here, hoping someone can help me out.

1: Any ideas on resolving this with the current switch? It's always been a bit stiff, and my understanding is that the bushings are commonly lost or assembled incorrectly, but I haven't been able to find solid information on replacement bushings or how to properly assemble. Also, maybe this could be adjusted with the push rod?

2: Any possibility of converting to the '94 and up style? My understanding is that the mounts are lacking, and would need to be fabricated, but it's a hard area to get pictures of, and I haven't seen any information on doing this conversion.

3: I've seen some generic brake switches that appear to trigger based on pulling a spring. Seems like this might mount easily, but has anyone else used this style?

#1 the 8.8 swap should not have had any impact on the brake lights working

#2 Is it this type of switch?....

#3 Are you positive it's the switch that's causing the issues? The reason I ask that is my brake lights quit working, I replaced the switch and they worked sometime, then poking and prodding with the meter I just so happen to catch a flicker of a flash in the fuse box. What happened was one of the little pinch ear things that hold the bladed fuses in place had broken so when the fuse made just the right contact they worked. I've had three fuses in the panel do this, I've pulled the wiring for each one from behind the panel and just put inline fuses in their place.

1: Ok, wasn't sure about this. Thought there was less pedal motion with disc brakes on the rear, but that may have just been the full brake rebuild.

2: yes, that style of switch. Thanks for the video!

3: pretty sure it's the switch, as cruising the wires gives me good brake lights. It's a 94 engine and harness in a 90 body, so everything electrical is a bit of a mystery.

Only time I touched it was to replace it with a new one.... It didn't work at all originally, and I (stupidly) re-assembled it in the same way the PO had. Hmm.... I bet it's upside down or something.

edit: No, I did not swap the master. Seems to work really well with the stock cylinder.

I used a universal switch. I took an angle bracket with double stick tape and worm screws on the steering column and the switch is shut off by the pedal coming up . This isn't the exact unit, mine is a doorman but it is basically the same.

I need to dig through my replies because I took a picture of the set up and posted it here last year some time.
