Hello,

Hoping someone can help – any input greatly appreciated. I purchased a 2016 Grand Cherokee 3.6L last week and love it – besides one thing.

There is a ticking noise coming from the driver’s side foot wheal area. The best I can describe is that it sounds like playing cards on a bike tire. This seems to only happen between ~38-48 MPH and usually only when accelerating slowly. I’ve checked the driver’s side tire/wheel area and don’t see anything stuck. I’ve checked the driver’s side foot area and also nothing out of the ordinary.

I’m fairly confident, given the symptoms, this wouldn’t be anything stuck. It’s starting to worry me as the trucks brand new.

Any ideas?

Does it do it every time. Are you using cruise control at the time?

The ABS module, under the drivers side foot well, will spend a lot of time calibrating when new, not so much after a few weeks. During calibration is a clicking sound that one can occasionally hear.

Thanks for the input. So it happens about 3 out of 5 times during light acceleration - it wont happen during hard acceleration. This morning I also tried turning off all climate control, but noise still persists.

I'm happy to hear that it may be something temporary!

As long as you don't have any error codes and things are operating normally, you may want to wait. Mine will calibrate maybe once a week and can be heard for a short period of time under conditions you describe. I have adaptive cruise control and a slower but similar clicking is noticeable when cruise control is in action and it has to brake for slow traffic ahead.

Your fuel mixture could also be a little on the lean side (or you have a small vacuum leak). You could try a different brand fuel, or one with a little more octane and see if clicking subsides. If your clicking (like a engine ping) is longer duration, this could also be the cause. The ECU should eventually adapt. Locating a small vacuum leak is something best left to a pro.

Thanks. Just realized I didn't answer your question. No, this happens without cruise control on. Also, mine didn't comes spec'd with adaptive CC.

Yeah, it's definitely not coming from the engine. The noise seems to originate from the drivers side wheel wheal.

I'll try to up the octane as well. I figure I'll give it to 1k miles before taking to dealer.

I should say it happens without CC on. I haven't tried with since it happens at such low speeds.
The standard cruise won't apply brakes, so you won't get the clicking noise.

I appreciate the offer Kevin, I may take you up on that in the future.

Just to be clear - this happens when accelerating lightly - and no brakes applied. Maybe I wasn't clear on that. In fact, I've never heard the noise while applying the brakes at any speed. Does this still sound like ABS given that information? Thanks for the help!

I meant to say that you would hear a similar clicking when the adaptive cruse control is working. Since you don't have adaptive cruise, its not applicable, so never mind.

The brake system does calibrate regardless of trim and makes a clicking noise when doing so. You may hear the click under certain conditions like the one you describe.

If you find a way to cause the clicking reliably and can demonstrate it to a dealer, they should be able to tell you normal or not.

Hey ColdCase -

Thanks a lot for your help - I believe you were 100 percent correct! Today is my 16th day with the Jeep and the noise seemed to have disappeared around day 13. I'm so happy! I'm still keeping my radio off for the next couple of days to see if it returns, but so far, no noise. Thanks for your help!!!!!

I have this exact same issue! This is describing exactly what I am hearing. It is coming from the driver's side wheel-well. The sound only happens around 30-35 mph. It happens when I lightly accelerate and let up on the pedal. I'm wondering if this will cause issues in the future and if I should take it in to get checked out. I have a 2015 with tow and nav packages. There are about 23,000 miles.

I'd recommend bringing the vehicle into a dealer for diagnosis. Let me know if you need assistance establishing and appointment - Kevin T, Social Connect Team

Yeah - I would get yours checked out if you have 23k miles and it's continuous. Maybe they're not the same issue? Mine went away after 13 days just like ColdCase thought it would. I'm now enjoying the sound of silence!

It will recalibrate and click for a short period of time maybe monthly then semi annually or so.
