So I've looked in the service manual, on this site, and other places and I'm getting conflicting answers on where the ECT sensor is located on the 05 5.7 Hemi. The service manual and some threads here say the sensor is located under the AC compressor and that it needs to be removed to access the sensor, and that a deep socket won't fit in the space provided to remove it. Another user on this site says the manual is wrong, that it is just below the throttle body on the driver side. Which is it? And what is the best tool to use to remove it? I'm going to have to replace the one in my wife's WK in a parking lot, of course, and want to make sure I'm ready for the job.

I did find the sensor and it is at the top of the engine. Changed it out (***** to do!) and still same issue. Code won't clear with repeated attempts. Got it home, gonna have to check the wiring tomorrow when there's light. Not sure what else could cause it since it's isn't overheating.

Codes P0117 and P0118. This morning I unhooked the battery for about 20 minutes, hooked it back up, and codes and lights were still there, but the fan didn't start up right away. Using my scanner I was able to clear the code finally and everything has been good after multiple restarts. Let it run a while and no issues.
Gonna let it cool back down and see if things are still good before declaring victory.

It sounds like you have a harness or PCM connection issue. I would pull the battery negative cable, disconnect the harness. The sensor you're having problems with is also on the same harness I was having problems with on my MAP sensor (Black/Orange) which I believe is the second harness. from the front of the rig.

Just for SnGs. This was my fix, after replacing many many sensors. It is free to try and low risk. Be sure you disconnect your negative on the battery before attempting.

For a complete wiring diagram Refer to Section 8W.

  • When Monitored:
With the ignition on. Battery voltage greater than 10.4 volts.
  • Set Condition:
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit voltage at the PCM is less than 0.078 of a volt for more than 2.8 seconds. One Trip Fault. Three good trips to clear the MIL. ETC light will illuminate if equipped.

Possible Causes
(K2) ECT SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
(K2) ECT SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
ECT SENSOR
PCM

Thank you, I'll give that's a shot later today. This morning she fired up with the dash lights but no fan running and allowed me to clear the codes. Hopefully it's just a dirty connection. I swear these things are 190% wires, so if you don't know where to look your in trouble.

It will be interesting to see the results. Also be careful using brake clean on the harness. I made the mistake of oversaturating the connector with brake clean and it deformed the connector gasket/seal. You might tape off the seal if you want to soak it in cleaner.

OK, results. Wanted to wait a few days before posting to make sure everything was in the clear. I pulled the PCM harness connection as suggested and still lights and fan. So I took the Jeep to a garage I know reasonably well, they check things out and thought it might be the connection to the sensor. Luckily O'reilly's carries the pig tail harness so I order it and got it the next day. Changed the plug out along with about 12" of wire. Still same problem. So I gave up after throwing my hands in the air and took it to a good Jeep mechanic in town. They checked the wires and were able to clear the code. Drove it home and around town with no troubles.
Started it up the next morning and the lights and fan were on again. Took it back to the Jeep garage and they kept it 2 days, since it would only act up after the motor had completely cooled down, so they would test and wait, test and wait. Finally the problem was found, a bent pin where the ECM and harness connect. Never took that connection off so no idea why or how it would get bent, but they straightened it and it has been fine since Thursday evening.
