I've got a set of these that I want to install on my XJ. My terminals are nasty and I figure something like this would help with doing electrical accessories. My worry is that they are going to touch the hood. I know the negative doesn't really matter.

Has anyone done these and were there any issues?

They should work fine. If they stick up to high you could cut the pots down and use a regular nut instead of the wing nut. But if you have corosion problems now JUST changing the terminals wont solve it, you need to replace the cables aslo, go with heavier cable.

I plan on replacing the cables. I kept all the battery cabling off of my parts XJ so I could use them as a template. My cables are good, but I want to upgrade.

The plan is to also take some braided copper I have from a ham radio antenna project and install afew more ground straps.

Make sure you tighten the crap out of that wingnut, I have two boats and they work loose all the time.

I was thinking of getting some of those flat star washers that act like lock washers.

Either the "star" washers, or just get CRES locknuts (the ones with the Nylon collar up top.) 5/16"-18 should fit.

But no, I don't expect them to cause you any trouble. I've been selling them to XJ and MJ owners for years, and no trouble reported (and I've got them on my 88, and they haven't caused me any trouble, either.)

What's the benefit of using these over the usual replacement terminals?

The benefit for me is the ease of upgrading and changing aftermarket wiring solutions. It's easier to wire things like stereo's, cb's, lights, ect.

Plus if you are running the stock cables and terminals, they are probably nasty. Most replacement style terminals use a clamp to hold the bare wire to the terminal. If you put lugs on your cables, you can just put them on the post and tighten the nut.

Ahh, gotcha. Good to know.

benefit.....

For me primary benefit is not the battery clamp its the cables. With a marine type clamp you can use cleaner ends, pressed/formed with holes, etc., on your battery cables. Makes connections more secure and less likely to corrode as everything is tight.

The usual replacement terminals where the cable fits under a strap held down by a couple of bolts have huge voltage drop because they don't seem to grip the cable securely enough. A compression type lug crimped onto the end of the battery cable and attached to the marine style terminal stud would make a much superior connection.

I've thought for a long time if someone actually made replacement ready battery cables with all extra wires needed on both battery and starter end, all ends crimped/secured ready to be used on marine batter clamp type clamp, that kind of wire harness would sell like hotcakes.

Click the link in my sig, and let me know what I should do differently (apart from application data - I add to the list as I get confirmed information...)

I have some marine style terminals on mine. I mainly wanted solid brass terminals, and I like the post style for adding stuff. I haven't had a problem with them looseing, I really like the fact that they actually clamp down (the lead terminals bolt never did anything. And I have 0 corrosion and buildup since I replaced them.

I see no reason they would be close to touching the hood. Ill take a flat picture right now.. brb..

What are you asking me? I clicked on the links. Not sure what you are looking for???
5-90 sells exactly what you described, and they are probably the best cables you can buy or even make.

My dad bought a set and they are top notch. One of these days I will be buying another set for my DD.
