I've got no experience with the Primus, but I have two MSR backpack stoves. I have the original MSR Whisperlite Internationale and the MSR Dragonfly. My old Whisperlite is about 20 years old and still works like a champ, but it only has two settings, off and volcano. The Dragonfly has better simmer settings for cooking things at lower temps so you don't burn everything to a crisp.

Matter of fact I was cooking a big country breakfast last Sunday morning and about halfway through my eggs the power went out. I had my little Dragonfly fired up and cooking before my eggs had a chance to get cold. Finished up bacon & eggs on my back porch before my cup of coffee got cold.

I have the whisper lite which I have used on many occasions....the thing is bulletproof. Worth every penny

i have a MSR but if i was buying today and picking from those two i would go with the primus. that is because it does everything the MSR does,as well as can be run off canisters, which could come in handy. either one will provide great long lasting service in the field.

so did you buy the MSR?
Size, weight, temp control, boil times, multi-fuel capability, MSR dependability.

Aside from the fuel bottles, my Dragonfly fits into a 2 quart pot and barely weighs a thing.

Though I don't use it often, the simmer control on the Dragonfly is second to none.

3.5 minutes is a pretty decent boil time. The fuel mileage out of the Dragonflys are pretty healthy too. It'll run for over 2 hours on a bottle of white gas and close to 3 hours on a bottle of kerosene. If you're eating dehydrated food, that's enough for a few days.

I've run mine off of everything from JP8 to unleaded gasoline with nothing more than a jet change.

My dad's got an old MSR XGK that is almost as old as I am. In 30 years, he has replaced one pump cup and nothing else.
