Weighed my 1993 and my 1998 both with corner scales and at the truck scales. Both were 4200 lbs. I don't see how a V8 ZJ could be only 3800 lbs.

My old '96 Limited with every option was 3800 lbs on the scales.

open the door? check inside of it?
Those stickers only show (from every one I've seen) the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) which is the curb weight (weight of empty vehicle with full fluids) plus maximum payload (occupants, gear, coins in ashtray, etc.).

A nice easy way to check your weight is to just visit your local dump with a scale. Do it with a full tank of gas for more precise measurement. I've done this with my TJ after adding and removing many parts just to keep track of it. At the same time to kill two birds with one stone I clean out the garage and dump the trash.

Similar minds...I was going to suggest the same thing because I just cleared my back yard today. The scale at the dump isn't the most accurate, but it'll give you a pretty good idea. I've also used DOT truck weighing scales...next time you see a weighing station on the high way, just ask. If they're having a slow day, it's usually not a big problem.

To get back on topic, my repair manual says the ZJ Limited is 4200 lbs.

Amazing, to go along with the '96 at 3800 lbs, my '93 Limited 4.0 was 3700 lbs, and the '01 Laredo 4.7 was just over 4000 lbs, all on the same scale.
Don't know how a ZJ can possibly be heavier than a WJ as the WJ is 5" longer, 3" wider, and 5" higher:
WJ Base curb weight (4WD) - lb.
Laredo 4WD (4.0) 3970
Laredo 4WD (4.7) 4041
Limited 4WD (4.0) 4072
Limited 4WD (4.7) 4147
Limited 4WD (4.7 H.O.) 4206
Overland 4WD (4.7 H.O.) 4364

Strange!

Not necessarily strange, I believe that the published numbers tend to be a little optimistic (lighter) and that some of the options can create a weight gain up to a couple of hundred lbs. For instance, the 01 with V8 has a published weight of 4031 lbs, but with the Limited package, skid plates, and trailer hitch it has a measured weight of 4340 lbs.

BTW, my 93 Jeep book (I had a 93 4.0 also) lists the 5.2 ZJ at 3901 lbs and the 4.0 at 3574 lbs. If you can believe the numbers, your 93 with 4.0 was a bit overweight.

TJs are also heavier than XJs. (unibody vs. frame)

For the ZJ/WJ comparison, more efficient engineering can make a vehicle lighter and stronger.

Wow! The Jeep really is twice as heavy as my MZ3!

...but it actually weighs only about 300 lbs more than my wife's IS250 (2006). That is one tubby little car! I always knew it felt way too heavy! The factory rates the engine at 220 hp. This clearly isn't enough for such a heavy car.

...but the Jeep's HP is just fine! :2thumbsup:
