From the key in the "Off" position...turn the key On, Off, On, Off, On quickly (within a few seconds) WITHOUT engaging the starter. The code(s) will display on the odometer.

Maybe you didnt do it fast enough. Sometimes, it takes me several tries to get the timing correct. If done correctly, the codes, if any, will appear in a few seconds...not minutes.

I found this but still no codes yet

For the 1998 to 2002 models you can access the trouble codes as follows. Insert the key but do not turn. Fully depress the trip reset button and hold down. Next turn the key to the on position three times and then leave in the on position. Release trip reset button and the gauges will flicker and the odometer will count down and then show the trouble codes.

This is just a gauge test...this won't display any active error codes. Do NOT hold the odometer trip button when usung the On Off On Off On method.

The 2.5 refers to the software version during the gauge test (holding the trip button method). When using the key method (on, off, on, off, on), if done correctly, the word "donE" displays on the odometer, followed by any codes.

I just verified this on my 02 to make sure I was correct. It took me 5 or 6 tried to get it right. It can be tricky, but I assure you that it works

There are several years starting in 1998 when you could not use the key technique to have the computer display its own stored diagnostic codes. I'm not sure when that ability came back but it doesn't sound like it did until after 2000.
