My 98 xj has had a stumble in it for a couple of weeks. Doesnt do it everyday, maybe once a week. The last two days it has been shutting off on me. Did it twice tonight. Will the cps cause this?

Those are "classic" cps symptoms. However, if CPS doesn't fix it, then some other possibilities to keep in mind...
*Fuel pump as tdogg mentioned (put gauge on fuel rail; verify pressure)
*Coil (check resistances)
*Coil wires (check resistance; better yet just replace wires)
*Distributor cap and rotor (replace)
*Camshaft position sensor (inside of distributor)
Good luck and post back the CPS results....
