Due to my window tint. I have my fronts to match the hardtop tint, and the guy says it's too dark. Wondering if I'll get any crap from him if I go back with the doors and top off?? He didn't charge me, so maybe I should try another place with the doors off???? Just need some sort of proof that top and doors can legally be removed when driving, cause they probably don't know the law concerning doors themselves...

i have heard of people doing that, i think you just need to have mirrors. i dont think there is a law in texas that says you have to have doors

The door off legality question has been asked before. It states somewhere in your US motor vehicle regulations (might be federal) that vehicles that are designed with doors that can be easily removed using simple hand tools can legally be driven with doors off. Someone else may remember the thread. That's a good point about the mirrors. I think some states need just drivers side others require both side mirrors.

I don't have mirror relocation brackets either. Dang. What do the relocation brackets cost??? I think there was a write up somewhere that showed a cheap way of making them. Anyone recall it??

How about this idea- Do you have any friends with the same kinda doors, you could borrow their's for the inspection.
They live too far, and gas would equal the price of motorcyclye mirrors. Wonder if I can find them at autozone?

i was a texas inspector up until a couple of years ago, and unless something has changed, a vehicle only needed 1 mirror that could view 200 feet to the rear. did not matter if it was inside or outside.

and i don't remember if doors/window were required or not, i guess i never ran into that.

I would do the right thing and either remove the tinting or replace it with a lighter tint that is legal. Tints that are too dark are illegal for a reason, police can't see in when they approach a car which means they could get shot by the gun they can't see behind the tint. Do the right thing.

What state are you in? As jhanna stated, in Texas you only need your rearview mirror. I took my Jeep in sans door and top and passed the Texas inspection (which is no challenge) just fine...

Cheers! M2

Might also point out that the cops approaching that illegal tint window are gonna be in a far worse mood than ones coming up to a legal tint... No doubt they are aware of the dangers too.... You are less likely to get shot accidentally or get a ticket on purpose....

By the time you go cheap mirrors you could go cheap retint... Check the law and comply sounds good to me....

So why not apply the rule to the rear windows as well. An officer can just as likely be shot at while approaching the car by someone in the backseat.

I might just go up there and ask if I can do it with only a rear view mirror on. Only problem is, it's looking like it's about to rain down here in houston. So it'll have to wait till monday.

§ 547.602. MIRRORS REQUIRED. A motor vehicle, including
a motor vehicle used to tow another vehicle, shall be equipped with
a mirror located to reflect to the operator a view of the highway
for a distance of at least 200 feet from the rear of the vehicle.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.

I live in Houston and just went through inspection with the top and doors off without a problem. I do have a driver side mirror attached to the window bracket and the rear mirror with the doors off.
