Hello! So I bought a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4 or 5 months ago and visually it’s in pretty rough shape. It’s got the 5.2L V8, 44RE transmission, and NP231 transfer case(aftermarket). It runs great but it’s not the biggest looker. About 2 weeks ago I got home from somewhere and when the gate opened I pressed the gas and I noticed it was in second gear. I turned it off and on and it reset itself and everything was fine. I plugged in my OBD11 sensor and the error code P1757 came up. I did some research and there isn’t really a whole lot about it. It randomly did it over the next week, but not often. On last Thursday I tried replacing the two visible solenoids along with the 3-4 accumulator spring hoping that it would fix it, and it did until the next day. It suddenly wouldn’t go back into 1st at all. It would shift like normal, just not into 1st. I found out it had WAY too much fluid so I drained it out to the correct amount, and it’s still going into 1st. The only way to get it to go into 1st is to manually put it in. I’m going to take it to a mechanic soon, but I just wanted to try this before I spent any money. Could someone please help?

Governor sensor and solenoid needs to be replaced, those are what causes the issue in about 99% of the cases. You probably already changed the OD and TCC solenoid package, you just didn't replace everything needed.
Make sure the inner wire harness is in good condition, unless you already changed it.
Adjust front & rear bands while replacing the solenoids and sensors.
It's also worth checking the transmission speed sensor. TSS is in the OD housing on the drivers' side - do NOT confuse it with the vehicle speed sensor which is located in transfer case extension housing.

That’s what they were, the governor sensor and solenoid. I did replace those, but it didn’t do anything. If I didn’t plug them back in all the way I it possible that it could have only shut off 1st? When I replaced them I didn’t thing to check any wires or gaskets or anything though. What bands are you saying I should adjust? I’d get back in there and check everything but transmission fluid isn’t cheap. Is the TSS inside or outside of the transmission? Sorry for all the questions, this has really been bugging me

I'm new to this website so im not sure whether youll be able to open that or not. If you can, is that thing going into the transmission the TSS? if I pull it out to check it will fluid come out? also, if you look in the back of the picture you'll see another one hanging there. is that the one that went to the original transfer case or did it come loose and start the problem I'm having?

You need 50 posts to post pictures. In the picture below, you can see the TSS (white & black plug) on the OD housing, sticking down on an angle towards table:

In this picture, TSS is on the lower right corner with the plug attached:

These are the solenoids, sensors and wire harness you need to change:

Ok yes that plug is the one I sent in the picture. Will fluid come out when I take it out? I did replace those two solenoids and the 3-4 accumulator spring, do you have the part numbers to the rest of the stuff?

TSS can be changed very quickly, keep a rag and the new TSS next to you when removing the old one and you won't loose more than a few drops.

In the picture you also see a transgo jr. shift kit, it is not necessary.

I do not have part numbers for the TCC/OD solenoid pack, but it can be found in Rockauto, eBay, etc.. 42RE-46RE uses the same pack, just make sure to order one for the correct year model due to differencies in the connectors.

If solenoid & sensor replacement won't fix your issue, you're looking at dropping the valve body, there are other possibilities for the lack of 1st gear. That being said, only missing one gear and everything else working normally is a sign of solenoid, sensor or valve body issues; transmission mechanical failures often cause other symptoms as well.

Is this the correct tcc/od solenoid? All websites I've looked on say that it doesn't fit but the sellers say that it fits 44RE transmissions
You MUST make sure you buy the EXACT version of the solenoid for your year model. Even though the electrical outputs and inputs are the same, the internal connectors vary from year to year.

Easiest is to buy it from Rockauto, or reputable transmission shop like https://transpartswarehouse.com/ (been using this quite a bit during past couple years), or https://www.cascadetransmissionparts.com/ (not sure on how cascade transpart is nowadays regarding their service and part availability).
eBay/ Amazon sellers don't always know what they are selling, so you need to be careful if buying from them. As long as year model range matches, 42RE, 44RE and 46RE uses the same solenoids and sensors.

Also I probably should have mentioned this sooner but when I was putting the plate that holds the 3-4 accumulator spring in one of the five screws broke, is that something to stress about?
All valve body and transmission fasteners need to be tightened to specification, and you really shouldn't be missing any bolts.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/42RE-46RE-...4874577?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

I looked at rockauto and found the tcc/od sensor for my jeep and it's the same part number as the one I linked, and it also says it fits 44RE transmissions from the time period my jeep is. I can't find the part on transpartswarehouse but I found it on rockauto and cascadetransmissionparts but the two websites get horrible reviews, I think I'm going to try the one on eBay

Ill look around and see if I can get new screws for the plate, if I can't my family is good with that kind of stuff so I'll see if they can help me out

That ebay part should be the correct one.

I've never had problems with Rockauto, been ordering parts from them for over 10 years, multiple times a year. As long as you select parts from known high-quality manufacturers, you get what you pay for. Overseas express shipping in 2-3 days, for under half the total cost of buying the same parts locally. Good deal if you ask me.

I hope those will solve your issue  If not, let us know and we'll try figuring out what next. Btw., do you remember what brand the governor solenoid and sensor were that you bought? Did you change the fluid filter when replacing the gov. sensor and solenoid? Did you get a new gasket for the governor housing with them?

The website says the brand is GJ, I kind of wish I had gone with a name brand set. No I didn’t change out the filter because I changed it about 2 months ago, is it supposed to be changed every time? No I didn’t replace the gasket, I didn’t realize what it was until after so I’m going to order that as well. It might be a while before I get all of the parts and get a chance to put them in, but I’ll let you know how it goes!

They all use the same governor housing gasket; A500, A518/A618 is basically just a different name for the 40-48RH/RE- series transmissions.

Yes that seems very similar to what’s happening to me! And it did start extremely soon after I put in the cheap solenoids. I can’t find the correct mopar ones( at least not off of a sketchy website) so I bought some more expensive and higher rated ones on Amazon from Hercoo

Did you use the Borg Warner HD solenoids? They are supposed to be an improved design with a higher flow. If you look on the Dodge truck forums a lot of those guys use them.
