Can someone explain how the recirculation door works so I can try to fix a problem I'm having. On my '06 TJ, the recirc door flops around, making an annoying noise. Here's what I know....the accuator lever seems to be working properly since I can feel it move in and out when I turn the selector switch. But, the door will only move towards the passenger side, regardless of whether the switch is on recirc or fresh air. Is that normal? Also, it seems to loose. Is it supposed to be tight against the side? And last question, where is the other end of the vacuum line that is attached to the actuator (green)?

Thanks for any assistance.

The green line for the recirculation actuator comes from the back of the mode selector switch in the HVAC panel. It should only have vacuum when in the recirculation position to move the door to block incoming outside air from entering. Here are a couple diagrams from the FSM that may help. If the actuator is moving as it should check that it is still connected to the arm of the door (#2 in the 2nd diagram).

I will try to help.
how door works- - The door is spring loaded NO (normally open). Below is FSM description TMI
.
THe green vacuum line goes to the AC/HTR control panel. When selected vacuum moves actuator and linkage closing door.

DESCRIPTION
When equipped with A/C, a vacuum operated recirculation
door actuator is used to control the movement
of the recirculation-air door within the HVAC
housing (Fig. 33).
When vacuum is supplied by the A/C-heater control
to the recirculation door actuator, the actuator linkage
is pulled into the actuator, which moves the
recirculation door lever and recirculation door to two
Recirculation position. The recirculation door actuator
is spring loaded, so when vacuum is released
from the actuator, the linkage moves the recirculation-
air door back to its static position (fresh air).
The recirculation door actuator can be accessed for
service through the glove box opening in the instrument
panel.
The recirculation door actuator cannot be adjusted
or repaired and, if faulty or damaged, it must be
replaced.

Thanks for the replies. The actuator moves when I turn the selector switch. And the arm of the actuator seems like it is connected to the arm of the door per the diagram. But the door does not move. It stays to the passenger side regardless of what position the switch is in. When I reach up and feel where the door is hinged, the side towards the rear of the car is much looser than the other hinge point.

Update....I see the problem now, but not sure how to fix it. The linkage has come out of the hole where it connects to the hinge. In the diagram above, it's the round opening above the #2 arrow. It seems like it would be easier to get it back into the hole with the actuator arm extended, but I can't seem to get it lined up. Don't want to force and break it.

Any tips? Thanks.

Sorry, one more update. Here's a picture of the linkage and the opening above it where the door hinge is. Now I think I might be missing a part of the linkage, because there seems to be no way for it to reach that opening. What do you think?

Update on my broken recirculation door mechanism.....ordered a replacement upper air inlet housing (p/n 5073172AA) via Amazon. Shipped from a dealership in Chicago, but lost in transit by USPS!

This is a discontinued part, so pulling my hair out trying to find one. The dealer who shipped the first one is assisting.
