Well, last night I was talking to a few guys who were running flame thrower kits on there cars...From what I understand theres quite a few comapnys out there selling these and there fairly simple to install...I know I will have to remove my cat, which is no problem since we have no emissions in FL, but my question is, has anyone ran one of these kits on any vehicle.....mainly 6 cyl.????

I'd figure that pretty much any kit would work.
Prolly just a fuel injector slapped into the exhaust and a spark plug on the end. I cant imagine that it's really worth it since the exhaust tip turns down, unless you've upgraded the exhaust.

Despite the fact that they will make you look like you can't decide between a ricer and a jeep I'm sure one would work... also.. as pointed out.. with the downward exhaust I do hope theres a way to turn it off for when you're off road... starting fires = bad

Well heres the kit I'm looking at...Flame Thrower

Im really not too worried about the turn down exhaust, fairly easy thing to fix/upgrade.....I know I will have to remove the cat, and they say a 6cyl. wont get a HUGE effect but still a 5-6ft flame will work for me....

Side exhaust and flames is a good way to keep ricers from drag racing you. I doubt it would get hot enough to do some serious damage, but it sure would make all their vinyl stickers melt off!

I wouldn't get one of these for a jeep, but I thought about it with other cars. Why do you have to remove the cat? The injector goes on after the muffler, near the tailpipe. It's a sure way to get arrested...yet before the call goes in you WILL get that tailgater off your ***!

Well, your not actually using an injector, your basically installing a spark plug that you control the spark to on or near the tip of your exhaust, the Cat typically catches all un-burnt fuel leaving the motor, so remove that and as long as the fuel/flamable vapors can pass through your muffler, they'll hit the plug a woof!!! They say a good strong running V8 will throw a 15 ft. flame and hopefully a decent 6 will throw anywhere from 5-6 feet

i seen an old CJ w/side pipes running them, was cool but ricey
Dude, I have a CJ with side pipes and have thought seriously about getting a kit...with just headers and glass packed side pipes, it would make huge flames...just haven't gotten around to it since it's very low on my "financial priority" list. However, it might burn a gouge out of my rear tires...

LOL!!!! Imagine what that would look like, when gas spits on youre tires and both of them or momentarily sorounded by fire inside the fender wells???!!!!

I thought this post was a joke until I started reading the responses and clicked on the links. Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine a bigger waste of money than something that makes flames shoot out your exhaust pipe, especially on a Jeep! But then again, I thought the flames shooting out the back of the batmobile looked stupid too. Just my

. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
IMO this looks best on old-school hotrods... dunno why.

And if I were possessed by satan and decided to do this, I think I might personally have a little trouble with my exhaust... seeing as how it's dumped under the rear seats
Seat wamers come to mind...

The only way this mod looks DECENT is on an old school hot rod w/ a loud V8 and dual exhaust. Otherwise it is just ricey and has no purpose. Not to mention...they are usually ILLEGAL! I know here in MA you can get in alot of trouble real quick if you have it. I will gladly park behind you when you "showoff" to your friends though so that I can get a new paint job.

Can this be right?? I'm new to jeeps but I know plenty of guys who run sports cars with no cats (none of them however shoot flames). I've got to believe if you were letting enough unburned gas out of the cumbustion chambers to create a 10 foot flame you'd have a serious problem. Not to mention the fact that every mechanic who like to have a smoke while working would find himself without a garage the first time he lit up while one of his cat-less projects was running in his shop

i saw a quick writeup somewhere to make one yourself. basically it was:

1. remove cat
2. drill a hole in the exhaust and screw in a spark plug
3. wire the spark plug up to a push button in the dash, so you can push it to ignite the spark.

can't rmember i there was a sijmple distributer in the diagram...

I could see that maybe giving you a 6 inch flame similar to what you see in race cars or sport bikes when you downshift and push a lot of extra fuel through the motor. But if you really want to turn your tailpipes into torches I would think you'd have to introduce post-combustion fuel.

So how many Lbs of thrust do those afterburners produce? Is it enough to lower my 1/4 shots?

If you think I am serrious, you might have an exhast leak worth checking into...

LOL..... Follow the link that I posted earlier for the kit...It'll explain everything ( NO CATLESS CAR WILL SHOOT A 10 FOOT FLAME WITH OUT A PROPER SOURCE OF IGNITION!!!!).....plus, just use your head and think, do you really believe that the fumes exiting the exhaust of a cat less car are really concentrated (grouped) enough to be ignited by a lit cigarete??? The fumes need to be ignited when they are together (inside the exhaust pipe) for decent combustion!!!

Check out this tech article from Rod and Custom. There are a few rodders around here who run flamethrowers, one on a Nova called the "Blue Goose" who can actually play a tune with the popping flames and another with an old Ford truck who developed his own system fueled with propane
