Hopping while driving, front tires grabbing while turning (i think)

Did a bunch of work to the 79 over the weekend. It got all new u-joints, brake calipers, transmission mount, and shocks.

Whatever it's doing now, (just can't seem to exactly figure it out what that is) , it wasn't doing before this work was done. So I guess my question is, since it must be something to do with something I worked on, where do I start? Can my wheel bearing be too tight? Nothing is even warm to the touch after driving it around and there aren't any strange noises other that the tires crunching the loose sand on the pavement.

We haven't gotten the jeep roadworthy yet, so we make short runs through the subdivision, maybe about 40 mph, and it seems to hop on the straight stretches ( feels like it's coming from the back) and the when we get to the cul-de-sec to turn, it seems to grab in the front wheels... or it could be the back wheels, just can't tell. Almost like the front tires are rubbing something, but I checked and they aren't touching anything.

I guess it would be better to ask me questions because I'm sure I've left out a bunch of important information.

Thanks!

Your sure you dont have the front locker engaged? You mentioned new ujoints, Did you drive I before you replaced them? The po could have different gears front/back, and in 4wd, you'd get wheels spinning at different speeds.

yeah, we thought of that, but checked and not in 4 wheel drive, hubs not locked either.

Yes, it was driven before the work was done, and it didn't do this.

The hopping occurs any time while driving straight now.

The grabbing feeling is at normal turn speed with slight brake.

Boy, it sure sounds like the front end is engaged. I would double check it. With the Jeep on the ground, can you turn the front driveline by hand? If not, then you will want to jack up one front tire and try to spin it. If it won't spin, then the hubs are engaged and the t case is in 4x4.
It may be that the hubs were not installed properly and the t case shifter has been bumped, perhaps when the mounts were replaced.

driveline won't turn with it on the ground.... :(

Will have to get into the garage to jack it up... update to follow....

Messed with the 4 wheel drive shifter.... still in... moved it around a bit until the front drive shaft turned, now the jeep seems fine.... so thank you very much !!!

It would help if I had a dummy knob that reminds me what the shift pattern is...

It wouldn't be so bad, but 3 different jeeps, 3 different shift patterns... I wouldn't be a very good thief...

Thanks for the links.... I've gotta do something (even if it's a sticky note)

You got the t case out, but the hubs will still have to have been engaged. Be sure to check them.
