This is my 1st jeep it was bought for cheap with dreams of fixing it up to put back on the road. so far i have replaced front universal joints new brake pipes all round, new rear shoes and internals, new rear brake cylinders and finaly new brake discs and pads...... the brakes worked fine when i had completed fitting all the parts. then today after taking the jeep up too motorway speeds and testing the brakes they have started sticking! so i removed both front wheels and the calipers orthough had to persuade them with a hammer to get them to let go!. then continued to wire brush the brake sliders and copper greased them as i thought that would be the problem. put it all back together and the brakes work fine with light use but as soon as you really put your foot down they stick... please help!

thanks, I did check if the caliper pistons worked properly they both depress easily and moved out as they should when the brake is pressed. i did bleed one side when i replaced one caliper as it was siezed solid :S. so tomorrow i will bleed both sides and see whats what. Thanks again.

The factory rubber lines can collapse internally and act like a one way valve. Replace them as good insurance.

Check the caliper slides for an area where the pad has worn the slider down, this can cause the pads to hang up.

Check the steering knuckle where the brake pads slide back and forth, they are notorious for wearing grooves in them and not allowing the pads to move freely.

Ok, I started hearing a grinding noise from the passenger size wheel when I was braking and also felt the brakes pulsating. Thinking it was my brakes, I pulled the tire and looked at them. When I pulled the caliper off this is what I found when I inspected the slides for the brake pads:

There appears to be a notch in the brake slide and it appears the backside brake pad is getting stuck in the notch. The pads themselves still have pad left but the backside pad's slides are worn way down causing the pad to shift and rub on the inner edge of the rotor when braking (hence the grinding noise). I see myself replacing the pads as well as replacing the steering knuckle since the slides are all one part of the steering knuckle. My question is how hard is it to replace the steering knuckle? I've done brake jobs before, my major worry is the balljoints the knuckle pivots on, is there a way to take the knuckle off without pulling apart the balljoints?
