Looking for a gift for a friend. Not very familiar with the upper end tequilas, but these two seem to be the best of the offerings in the local stores. I'm more of a good bourbon guy myself, what say you knowledgeable tequila types on these two choices? Taste, flavor, smoothness?

Patron silver

I like Patron silver. Drink it straight. Never really liked the taste of the anejos & resposados. Oak aging is for whiskey, not tequila.

Either of those is OK, but if your store sells Don Julio Reposado (instead of the Anejo) it will probably appeal to the widest range of individual tastes. Everyone has their preference so it's tough to say "better" or "worse" - both of those are perfectly good tequilas. Patron calls itself "ULTRA PREMIUM" but anyone can say that about themselves, it doesn't mean anything. They're both tasty.

Blancos (or "Silver") are not aged, and tend to have the most fruity, herbaceous flavor and Anejos (aged around a year, give or take, in barrels) tend to have a bit softer aroma and a more individual taste (that can be good or bad depending who's tasting it). Reposados are aged a few months, and fall between those - not all of them have a broad appeal either but I've had Don Julio's Repo, it's an easy drink and one I'd serve to anybody.

My personal favorite of all tequilas is El Mayor, either in Blanco or Reposado... but it's hit or miss whether you'll find it. BevMo has it here in AZ.

Last time I had anejo was in Mexico... Me likey.

For straight drinking, I prefer the Patron Resposado. If you are making margs, then silver is better. The resposado is very mild and doesnt have a harsh kick like the cheap tequilas.

I would go with Don Julio. Was just in Mexico getting married and went to a Tequila tasting at the resort, Patron is definitely a lower end Tequila.

Personally I am a fan of Don Eduardo Silver. Awesome flavor straight up without the need for the crappy tequila condiments (lemon/lime, and salt). Not a fan of Patron or Don Julio. But if pressed to choose between those two I would pick Don Julio.

Patron silver or gold. either is really good in every way. Ive never had don julio but ive read and watched so much about it that i really want to try it.

Depending on how good friend....

Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Anejo Tequila
Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Anejo Tequila - 100% Añejo. 100% Blue Agave. Aged in oak barrels for an average of 3 years. Final blend includes Tequila from reserves aged over 30 years. Only the estate's finest 10-year-old agaves are hand-selected. Only the most flavorful inner portion of the agave's piña (heart) is used. Vibrant, with a full, mellow flavor, combines floral, agave, vanilla and Cognac-like flavors.

Reserva de la Familia is the Cuervo family's finest Tequila. In fact, for over 10 generations it was a family secret only shared with the closest of friends. In 1995, to celebrate their 200-year anniversary as the world's leading producer of Tequila, the Cuervo family decided to share this blend of its special Tequila reserves with people who truly savor an exceptional taste sensation.

Reserva de la Familia is often served in a snifter, where its complex flavors and aromas can be fully appreciated. Produced in limited quantities with a distinct personality that varies from year to year, Reserva de la Familia has been recognized with several prestigious awards in Mexico, the United States and Europe.

Each bottle is handmade, numbered, dated and sealed in wax, and every year the Cuervo family commissions a different Mexican artist to design the new collectible box for Reserva de la Familia."

This is really good sipping Tequila. Minimal burn, great tast, however it is expensive ~$100 a bottle. However it does come in a decorative wooden box. This is not a tequila for mixing, this is stand alone stuff.
