I have a rear cargo cover that will not retract all the way;

All of the parts are there, just every time i close the cargo door, it sags down and doesnt spin.

grease? lubricant? anyone know of any fixes that work so im not just spinning my wheels?

any advice would be appreciated.

Remove it, push on the ends, then wind the cover around the spindle 1-2 times to make it have more tension, sort of like winding a spring. If you go too far, it won't pull out far enough when the lift gate is up. Easier done after removing the large plastic end cap. Think mine only took 1-2 turns.

ok so i tried this, apparently incorrectly, because now it doesnt retract at all, instead of just halfway, it stays where it's pulled out unless manually twisted.

if anyone has a link to a video or maybe a more descriptive write up?

Sounds like you let the ends spin when you pushed them together and loosened the spring even more. It works similar to a venetian blind.

The plastic end cover keeps it from unwinding when installed in the Jeep, as the ends are always depressed.

With it removed from the Jeep, push the ends together to release the latch, hold the ends so they don't spin, then wind the cover around to increase the tension. When the tension is correct, reinstall the plastic end cover. Then put it back in the Jeep.

It may also work to fold the back seats down, then wind it up in place (with the plastic cover removed). Just winding the cover around isn't enough. Pull the cover out and wind it around some more to put tension on the spring. DO NOT wind it too tight or the spring might break when the cover is pulled all the way out. If it feels like it comes to a stop without coming out far enough, don't force it, you have the spring too tight. Just wind/unwind the cover until you get proper tension AND enough length when the hatch is open. Then reinstall the plastic cover.

So i attempted holding the two ends together and removing the pin at the end of the plastic cover ( i assume this is how you remove the cover). The pin will not come out, so i wanted to verify this is how to remove it, as i'm already tearing up the end just trying to take this thing apart.
