This is a Jeep forum so I'll give you one guess what most people will suggest;)

What are you looking to do and are you looking to get a WK(05 GC) or something older? If you put a bigger lift kit on the touareg's air suspension and some nice big beefy tires I want you to get that just so I can see what it looks like;)

oh...that is a hard one....my first answer would have been; "my best advice is to not give you any" but I have owned both VW's and JEEPS. I know nothing on the Touareg but if it is like any other vw then they will last a long time; as will the Jeep. The one piece of advice I will give you is how many vw's have you seen with well over 200,000 miles on them and still running like new. I have seen way too many Jeeps here with that many miles and happy owners too. I would have researched both vehicles first before posing that question to a site soley for Jeeps. Good Luck.

Boy, this all boils down to personal preferance. The fact that you are considering a VW means you like it already. This is what sticks me to Jeeps and Chrysler/MoPars in general. Go with what you know. I have been wrenching on Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouths for 20 years now and I know them pretty well. When something is not working I can figure it out pretty quick. I am dumb on Fords and Chevys because I just don't know them that well(and that Fords are junk). I just bought my second ZJ and the decision was greatly influenced by the first ZJ I bought my wife has now. I learned volumes about these vehicles by driving, offroading, and yes fixing them when something was broke. A few of the problems I have with my '94 ZJ (my work beater) I have already solved on my '95 so I knew exactly what the fix was.
If you are a Jeeper and you want to switch, consider what you will giving up besides what you are gaining. Changing brands is like moving to a different state in some ways. :)

I test drove a diesel Touareg and really liked it. But, it had two primary strikes against it for me:

1) It is far too expensive for what you get
2) It is like driving a luxury SUV, not a Jeep-type vehicle -- as reflected by it's $60,000 price tag -- and I would be afraid to take it off the road.

I was also suprised, for the size of the vehicle, how poor the mileage ratings are. Both gas engines require 91 octane gas, and the V-6 was rated at 15/20mpg while the V-8 was rated at 14/18. That is worse than my GC gets, and I don't have to use 91 octane. The diesel was much better, with a rating of 17/23mpg. I would expect a diesel to get better mileage than that -- my Ford Powerstroke diesel gets 22mpg when running empty, and it is a lot bigger engine and vehicle than the Touareg.

So, I prefer my Jeep!

interesting - I test drove two suvs the v8 Toureg & LR3.

The VW I found to be very nice inside and very boring on the exterior. While I like the rear - its the front facia and especially the side of the truck I found very plain. The air suspension is straight Audi and its amazing. However the vehicle is one heavy and two slow. Not to mention 13 MPG... My hemi has more Bhp & Torque but gets 18/19 MPG.....I didnt even test drive my Cherokee....

I will recommend any Jeep, but if you do get the toureg, get the TDI.
I concur wholeheartedly. The TDI does look and perform well. However, I only see it comparable at half the price. Go with the Jeep Limitied Hemi, and you will not be disappointed.

I'm hoping to find a touareg TDI to replace my 99 WJ in maybe a year or so. While the WJ has served me excellent, I don't like the new grand very much.

Problem with the treg is that I will find it very difficult to spend 60K on a volkswagen. It is extremely nice, and actually very capable off road (with the air suspension) but it's still a volkswagen.

Would be nice if the upcoming Audi version wasn't a total soccer-mom version but unfortunately it is. So is the cayenne version which is also fugly.

I am also looking at Land Rovers, but I don't like the new LR3 so it would have to be an 04 Disco, but they still had that anemic V8, I wouldn't want to try and tow anytying with that.

I test drove the LR3 as well and found it to be veryimpressive inside - the outside was alot smaller than I expected and the milage was I believe around 14 MPG. Its heavy and slow but very nice.

Just curious - why dont you like the new JGC?

I think a Nissan SUV would be a better category fit to the Jeep than the T'reg. It has V6 or 8 options and both are rated to pull big stuff.

Are there other considerations than the Jeep to the VW?

(Heck....more of the Nissan is made in America than the Jeep is. Don't get me wrong, I know this is a "global manufacturing" environment we're in.)

Anyway....I'm leaning towards the Grand. The steering wheel controls for the radio alone are enough to sell me though.

The Tregs are nice...very classy vehicle. And I really like the idea of the torque-monster V10 diesel in the TDI model. But I have a hard time recommending VWs to people...I've owned 3 different VWs of various years, and still lurk on a couple of VW boards. They're great-driving vehicles, but they're plauged with niggling issues that can drive you nuts, and VW dealer service is very inconsistent. The dealer that I bought one VW from had a great service department, but it was a combined VW/Infinity dealer, so the mindset in dealing with all their customers was to deal with them as if they had all bought a Q45 even if they had a base Golf. I moved to a different city and started going to the VW dealer there...lousy service experience....worst I've ever been treated at any dealership or service department.

My former Jetta was a great-driving vehicle that I loved. But it was very expensive to service, it was tough to find even simple things like oil filters anywhere but at the dealership, and had a couple of problems that plauged it the entire 70,000 miles that I drove it. It would periodically die for a second or two while driving down the road, then instantly re-start like nothing had ever happened. The ABS wouldn't work if the car ran for more than about 30 minutes...the dealer ended up replacing pretty much everything in the braking system and it still did it. And the seats used cheap plastic locator tabs in the seat tracks...after about 6 months they'd wear from just moving the seat back and forth once a week to vaccum the car, making the seat wobble (and no I'm not a grossly overweight person...6 ft and 215 pounds). Those three things were never completely fixed despite spending more time in the service department than any vehicle I've ever owned.

I can't really speak for Jeep reliability since my WK is my first Jeep. But other than brakes on the early WJ, most of the problems that people have (that I've read about anyway) seem to be more related to lots of miles and lots of hard off-road use than any sort of real design flaws.

I'm still interested in your response Miguel...

Nice to have you here.
Thanks guys,

Although I can't comment on the VW Touareg, I can, however, inform you guys on any questions that you may have regarding the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I can provide information regarding any features, options, or package groups available on the vehicle. I can also comment on the technologies found on the '05 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For example, I can provide you with information regarding the available 5.7L HEMI V8 engine as well as a breakdown of all available transfer cases. In addition to that, I have official performance ratings such as EPA estimated mpg, hp figures, torque, towing capacities, etc.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I'll be around.

Alrighty then....I saw a 'Reg the other day and noticed tha they have an ingenious fixture in the design of the roof racks.

Specifically, they have integrated both racks that (when all the way back) and together, form what looks to be a highly effective spoiler to assist airflow and therefore, efficiency.

Question: I have advocated on this forum keeping the racks on the Grands all the way back when not in use and wonder if I'm wishfully thinking it will make a difference. Does it?

Second, can we request for a similar design for improvements in the Grand designs?
