ok i have searched and searched, and ive found a couple posts online for this problem but no real answers.
I have a 89 YJ with a 258, Howell TBI and for ignition i have an HEI, Electric fan swap with a torq-flo thermostat.

The problem, The TBI runs GREAT!! i love it and no lack of power or anything, doesnt run rich or lean. look at the plugs and they are perfect clolor. however when i turn it off, wait 5 mins or an hour as long as it is still warm it will always flood! i have to WOT to put it into "flood mode" to clear it out. then after belching black smoke and getting all the excess gas out she runs great. I can take off the air cleaner and watch the TBI's they give huge squirts of fuel on startup but as soon as its running, just a little trickle.

I have replaced the temperature sending unit. but i dont want to keep throwing money at it with no result!! soo frustrating.
I called Howell and he was no help really, kept telling me its my ignition module..... i have an HEI and good spark. dont understand how it could be the ignition.
Thanks guys for all the help in advance and i hope i can get this thing working.

Mine is like that too. If it doesn't start first shot then I have to clear the flood. From what I've read the temp sender is like a choke to a carb. If it is reading improperly it will cause it to send too much fuel. They are very delicate so make sure you don't get one thats been banged around. A new temp send helped mine some what but it still has issues from time to time. I think it has something to do with plug gap and ign but mine is gm setup from a astro van and not an hei. With the hei you shouldn't have any issues unless it is a plug gap issue. Just my two cents.

YEAH", there's alot to be said for a good holley 4 barrel and a hand choke ha ha. I wish I could help, but I stayed old school with a holley and old school hypo build. I would contact howell as I've heard they have great suport for their product.

rayn, mine is exactly like that. if i cant get a good shot at it the first two revolutions or so it floods. i have contacted howell and they told me that nonsense :/ what should the plug gap be? i set mine at .035 i believe.
It is very frustrating!!! thanks for all the fast replys guys

I set mine to 40 and it helped some. I only had to wot three out of the 12 times i started it saturday. Make sure your hei is getting 12v from the battery. set up a relay to do this if you haven't. that could help too.

MINE IS FIXED!!!! okay after checking and swapping and ohming and checking some more i found the problem!!!!!!!! at least for me it was :) after cranking and cranking constantly trying to start the heep i knew my starter was giong to die. so i even installed a cut off switch so when it flooded i could turn off my injectors from the cab so i didnt have to take of my air cleaner and unplug them. well today was the day. my starter finally died so i went to buy another starter, installed it and noticed it turns over A LOT FASTER! and voila it starts!!! i tried stress testing it (stalling under load, putting at angle, full operating temp) even short starting it ( not turning the starter over enough to actually start it, letting the bendix stop, and then starts beautifully)
so long post shortened, new starter= no howell TBI problems :2thumbsup:
i really hope this helps yall. I had no clue about this. but in hindsight it makes since. the TBI is trying to start the car with a shot of fuel. if the car is turning over too slow than it wont need/use that fuel and thus flood. <- makes since to me.

good find. I'm sure my starter is oem and one of the last things I need to replace. Glad you got it going.

Could just be that you need a new gasket. Mine did this before I had the Howell so I doubt there's a correlation. Now about four years later it needs another.

I put new dizzy in from sams. same problem. hook up vac advance and it sputters and backfires. I give up, so much time and money wasted on this. Some one give me a match and some gas. Better yet come get the keys and make it go away. Just don't tell allstate
