If the hole is about 5/8 or so big, its for a deep well socket to line up with the 4 backing plate bolts. No need to seal it

 

trust me there is a need to seal it. if i am not on the road i am in the mud, and i don't want my brakes packed with mud. i can rech the backing plate bolts with a wrench.

 

If it really bothers you that much then I would just find a rubber plug that will fit in the hole

Home-Depot has all different sizes of rubber plugs.

 

Its sealed when you slide the brake drum over it.

Wonder if there's a freeze plug that will fit.

 

It reads as though this hole may be in or near the center of the hub, not the one that we might expect to see on the wheel stud flange.

I say pics are in order.

Don't worry about the hole. Mud is going to get into the the drums from the back anyway. The hole is a great place to stick a water hose when you get out of the mud to clean out the drums.

If its not covered by the brake drum, there's only 1 place it could be, the very center.

probably looks like mine. No worries I go in the mud all the time no problems.

 

I stuff freeze plugs in the holes, but I like the idea of a rubber plug!

If you don't seal that hole some way, your brakes won't last long and that mud is REAL HARD on the wheel bearing seal.
