WK CRD leaking diesel tank replaced

Lots of threads on this but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I had to do mine this past weekend. '08 CRD but only 64K miles on it. Corroded steel tank was dripping diesel - dealer not helpful they could not find a replacement tank. 3 mechanics also turned the job down so I had to do it myself even though I usually don't do my own vehicle repair. Tons of info on forums + youtube on how to drop tank. Lots of spare plastic gasser tanks available at wreckers - mine was also from an '08.

$100 for tank + $15 for hoses + fuel line retainer clips (which invariably break) at Napa. Also had to buy a 18mm flex wrench to get the front passenger bolt, otherwise you have to drop the driveshaft.

Cut the old breather tube off the old tank and spliced it into the gasser one. Started first crank - no error codes. So far so good.

What an unbelievable design flaw.....

my new rockauto steel tank is waiting for a coat of gator guard bedliner for the bottom and also for my current tank to run low on fuel. corrosion is easily visible on the bottom of stock tank and skid plate, so i know i’m on borrowed time. i would like to get the skid plate sandblasted and bedliner coated too but that will add downtime.
i’m hoping to do the new install myself but back pain may kill that plan and i will have to go to the dealer.
