WK CRD leaking diesel tank replaced

Lots of threads on this but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I had to do mine this past weekend. '08 CRD but only 64K miles on it. Corroded steel tank was dripping diesel - dealer not helpful they could not find a replacement tank. 3 mechanics also turned the job down so I had to do it myself even though I usually don't do my own vehicle repair. Tons of info on forums + youtube on how to drop tank. Lots of spare plastic gasser tanks available at wreckers - mine was also from an '08.

$100 for tank + $15 for hoses + fuel line retainer clips (which invariably break) at Napa. Also had to buy a 18mm flex wrench to get the front passenger bolt, otherwise you have to drop the driveshaft.

Cut the old breather tube off the old tank and spliced it into the gasser one. Started first crank - no error codes. So far so good.

What an unbelievable design flaw.....

I wonder why we cant replace the steel tank with the plastic tanks the gas WKs use?
You can - that’s what I did & many others have. The plastic gas tank is the same except for the venting which needs some modifications to fit the old connections, as pictured.

As for inspecting the tank I don’t think you can see much of anything with that skid plate holding it up.
Ok thanks. Do you know if the OEM steel skid plate will still work with the plastic tank?
