While doing some coolant flush work under the hood, I noticed this part has a very noticeable tick while idling. For some time now I was convinced I had to investigate an exhaust manifold leak or a loud lifter, but this little tower is crazy loud.

1) what is the part? acts like some type of a solenoid .
2) is the ticking okay? Ticks in about 1/2 second intervals.

I can send a clip if it's needed but thought I'd start with pic. It's just in front of the brake res..

Purge solenoid for the vapor canister system. When the engine reaches a certain temp and or an amount of run time the pcm( computer) will cycle it on and off. It will make a ticking type sound. It is perfectly normal to hear it click .

Thanks so much. I seriously thought I had a leaking manifold gasket after doing a major teardown fixing a head gasket leak. Thought it came loose.

Mine typically ticks until the engine warms up and then it stops.

I replaced mine when I noticed it ticking, assuming it was sticky or worn. New one sounded no different, then I found here on the forum that it is normal. Sounds like a single sticky lifter. Will tick at idle, on a cold engine, will shut up once everything is up to temp....
