Year? More info on problem? Under what conditions does it overheat?
99 4.0 xj auto. It overheats every time I drive it in the daytime in pa. It actually sounds like its frying bacon in overflow. It happens when I drive no matter in traffic up hills down hills or open highways. It doesn't appear to leak anywhere but the overflow and the rad cap. Antifreeze is staying green now instead of chunked brown which I think is stop leak

you have a filed bus connection to the gauges, clean the contact on the cluster and re-install, if that doesent help swap the TPS.
I wish I knew more about my jeep, I'm such a noob. I guess I will learn as I go. So where is all of this? How do I clean it

do a pressure test on each cylinder, as well as a coolant test to see if engine gases are mixing into the coolant. when you stick your nose in the overflow bottle, does it smell like exhaust????

sounds internal to me.

good luck...
Thanks and no I don't smell anything but coolant and I will try pressure test tomorrow after work and it starting to seem like a head gasket... Sadly

How did that happen? You okay? Since you posted it I assume the XJ did its job though.

that's the planetary reduction gears you're talking about. The VC works to allow slip between the front and rear axles, prevents binding the gears inside the case, it also goes bad after a while causing excessive slip and no front wheel power
Wrong. The 242 does NOT have a VC. It simply has an open differential inside it, for lack of a better term. That is what allows the driveshafts to spin at different speeds

Gotcha,
also looks as if the 249 has a VC, the 242 doesnt based on the following thread...

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/symptoms-bad-viscous-coupler-but-242-a-1312138/

I also dont recall seing a VC in my 242 when I did some maintance.

Thanks, I have learned something new today.

John
absolutely correct. The 249 is not a very desirable case because of the VC.

Swerved to miss an animal going 55mph. Caught dirt, over corrected, rolled it twice into a ditch. Concussion with some cuts and bruises...nothing broken. Very lucky, and yes ditch water in CA stinks! Starting to swap goodies over to a '93 I got a deal on.

Started pulling my rear suspension so that I can add a leaf that I got from my parts jeep (I will cut and grind the leaf to size after I get the leaf pack out and apart).

Got my passenger side out, but I still need to get the upper shackle bolt out. It is partway out and the metal sleeve in the rear eye is now spinning with the bolt. I cut the lower shackle bolt off to remove the leaf pack - the hitch is in the way so I could not just pull the bolt out. I will install the new bolt the other way when I put it back together.

The drivers side has a problem in the front eye - that bolt is part way out and seized to the metal sleeve.

If my little 4 1/2" angle grinder cant reach up in there to cut deep enough I will go borrow a 6" or 7" angle grinder - whatever those bigger ones are sized at.

Hopefully tomorrow will see both leaf packs out so I can start cleaning the parts and cutting/grinding the new leaf to fit.
I got most of the way through mine with the 4.5" grinder, then brutalized it with a handful of sawzall blades. It will take a few..

Yup I had that problem too, tried torching it and everything. I eventually just had to spin the bolt through the mount and grind down the mangled metal. It was a b****, for lack of better terms. lol

Agreed!! That is awesome!! I believe monstaliner calls it predator green. That's what gave me the idea to paint mine grabber green. But this is the first time I've seen it on a XJ.
yeah it looks badass!!!! hmmm...
