Go to the junkyard and replace your headliner/sound bar. Get a sound bar from an older xj modify it for 6x9 speakers then wire it up and bolt it in.
This would almost work but the headliner is shaped to the sound bar, and I'm not sure if any later model xj's have the same headliner as the 99

The 97+ headliner and put the sound bar from an older model in a different location farther up. I've seen it done before. You will have 2 more speakers you could even cut it for a small pair of subs like 8in.

I wonder if I could fine one like my stock and leave it where it is and the get one that sits over the liner and put it over my rear seats near my head or something.

Wait how did you use the original backer if the original doesn't have the spot for the speakers up front?
the older pre97 soundbar, fiberglassed to the 99 backer board

How is the sound quality with this? I was thinking about angling the door speakers cuz the sound doesnt travel up well, but this might work even better.
its loud, works well, can here it over the wind noise. it was done mostly to have sound while doorless. some people do bump their heads if they don't know its there while jumping in, im 6'1" and have no issues with hitting it.

For the audio snobs; imaging is pretty horrible with the setup, but if you don't know what that is it likely doesn't matter to you.

I'd like to know what you think of those, and what kind of wheeling you do with them etc.
I run them and love them. They've been great and wear surprisingly well. I wheel mostly so cal desert and dry granite type rocks. No mud here
